The VW Amarok Thread

Volkswagen teases all-new Amarok with Chinese genes, and it’s not for South Africa

The new Volkswagen Tukan half-tonner was not the only bakkie to hit the limelight in South America this weekend.

Hot on the heels of the Tukan reveal, the German carmaker used a popular rodeo event to reveal a lightly disguised version of its all-new Amarok one-tonner.

There is a big caveat here, as this new Amarok appears to have been created for the South American market and is unlikely to be sold in too many markets outside the region.

That means it’s unlikely to replace the Ford Ranger-based Amarok bakkie that is built exclusively in South Africa for markets such as Europe and Australia.

Interestingly, while SA’s second-generation Amarok has Ford hardware, it appears that the new South American Amarok will have Chinese genes. According to Motor1 Brazil, the new bakkie will share its DNA with China’s Maxus Interstellar X bakkie through Volkswagen’s ties with its parent company, SAIC.

This will also result in it being the most powerful Amarok ever created, with a plug-in hybrid four-wheel-drive system inherited from Maxus and delivering outputs in excess of 340kW and 800Nm – hence its model designation, ‘800 TSI’.

The bodyshell of the prototype revealed by Volkswagen seems to corroborate the reports of it sharing a bodyshell with the Maxus Interstellar X, but Volkswagen has put its own stamp on the front end, and likely the interior too, if modifications made to the Ford-based Amarok are anything to go by.

Next-gen VW Amarok (for South America) to be based on a Chinese bakkie

Set to launch in South America in 2027, VW has teased the next-generation Amarok, which will reportedly be based on a platform from China’s SAIC Motor.

Following the reveal of the Tukan half-tonne bakkie in Brazil on 23 August 2026, Volkswagen has teased the next-generation Amarok for the South American market, with the ‘Nova’ model set to be underpinned by a platform from Chinese automaker SAIC Motor. This model will be built at VW’s Argentina-based production plant.

South America’s new Amarok will be based on SAIC Motor’s Starbridge Architecture, which underpins the LDV Terron 9 and MG U9. As such, the VW will likely employ the same 2.5-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, which produces 163 kW and 520 N.m of torque. Power is delivered to the road via a 4×4 drivetrain, paired with a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission. Similar to the LDV and MG, front and rear diff-locks may also be present.

Three days after revealing the Tukan half-tonne bakkie in Brazil, Volkswagen has teased a new Amarok for the South American market.

Dubbed the ‘Nova’ Amarok, the new bakkie will break from the current Ford Ranger-based model by adopting a Chinese-developed SAIC Motor platform and will be built at VW’s production plant in Argentina.

South America’s new Amarok will be underpinned by SAIC Motor’s Starbridge Architecture, which also forms the basis of the LDV Terron 9 and MG U9. As such, the Volkswagen is expected to share key mechanical hardware with these models.

VW Amarok 2.3TSI Aventura (2026) Price & Specs

Volkswagen will soon introduce a new Amarok 2.3TSI variant, offering a turbopetrol engine in conjunction with the flagship Aventura grade. Here’s what it will cost…

- 2.3TSI motor to be offered in Aventura trim
- Turbopetrol powertrain generates 222 kW
- R73 300 pricier than 2.3TSI PanAmericana

Volkswagen will soon expand its locally built Amarok double-cab bakkie line-up in South Africa by introducing a new Amarok 2.3TSI derivative in the flagship Aventura specification.

Yes, the Amarok 2.3TSI Aventura 4×4 10AT is set to join the local range, offering peak outputs of 222 kW and 452 Nm from its turbocharged 2.3-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine, which is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission as standard.

It will arrive as the 2nd petrol-powered derivative in the 2nd-generation Amarok line-up (which is, of course, built by Ford alongside the Ranger), with the Amarok 2.3TSI PanAmericana 4×4 10AT having launched locally back in October 2025. With a claimed 0-100 kph time of 7.6 seconds, this powertrain offers the fastest acceleration in the range.

Cars.co.za can confirm the new Amarok 2.3TSI Aventura 4×4 10AT will be priced from R1 178 900, making it some R73 300 more expensive than the PanAmericana derivative (starting at R1 105 600). Like that variant, the newcomer comes standard with 4×4, a configuration not currently available in the Ranger 2.3T (which ships only in rear-wheel-drive guise).

2026 Volkswagen Amarok 2.3 TSI Aventura price & specs in South Africa

The Aventura-spec Volkswagen Amarok 2.3 TSI has landed in South Africa. Here’s how much the flagship petrol-powered Amarok cost…

Introduced to South Africa in August 2025, the 2.3 TSI-powered Volkswagen Amarok was initially exclusively available in PanAmericana trim grade. Now, the German marque’s local arm has introduced a flagship 2.3 TSI derivative — Aventura — to the range. In terms of pricing the 2.3 TSI Aventura is positioned between the 3.0 TDI V6-powered Dark Label and PanAmericana models — the former and latter priced from R1 118 200 and R1 198 000, respectively.

As a reminder, the 2.3-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine produces 222 kW and 452 N.m of torque, the latter available from 1 750-2 000 r/min. Equipped with this powertrain, the VW (and the Ford Ranger it is based on) is one of the nine most powerful bakkies in SA. While Ranger models employing this unit are exclusively rear-wheel drive, the Amarok 2.3 TSI features 4Motion all-wheel drive. The Wolfsburg brand claims an average fuel consumption of 9.7 L/100 km, which translates to a driving range of 825 km on a full, 80-litre tank of unleaded.

Equipped with 222 kW engine, the latter paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the Amarok dispatches the 0-100 km/h sprint in a claimed 7.6 seconds. The top speed is rated at 180 km/h.

Well, we’ve painstakingly sorted through the double-cab segment to pick out the torquiest contenders. Interestingly, the top 5 includes turbodiesel, turbopetrol, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and fully electric powertrains.
