The VW Caddy Thread

These are all the new cars Volkswagen is bringing to SA in 2022

Next year looks to be quite a busy one for Volkswagen South Africa as it has plans to introduce eight new products. The models that will be introduced include all-new and updated products, some of which are locally built.

In the first quarter of 2022, Volkswagen will be introducing the locally built and updated Polo, including the GTI. the Volkswagen Polo facelift has been handed new updated design cues to the front and rear with the most notable changes being the head- and taillamp clusters. These LED headlamps will be standard across the range while the new IQ Light LEDs will be available optionally.

Together with this will be the all-new Caddy of which specs and standard features have already been detailed. Like before, this model will cater to both the passenger and commercial markets with a number of different trims and body styles.

Volkswagen Caddy and Nissan Qashqai score top marks in NCAP crash test

The Euro NCAP has revealed its final safety ratings of 2021, covering the range from the best to the worst that the car industry has to offer across vehicle categories. Among 11 new models tested, seven achieved a top five-star rating, including the BMW iX, the Genesis’ G70 and GV70, the Mercedes-EQ EQS, the Nissan Qashqai, the Škoda Fabia and the Volkswagen Caddy.

The electric FIAT 500e and MG’s Marvel R also did well and earned four stars each. However, the year ends on a downer as Dacia Spring and Renault’s facelifted electric ZOE qualified for only one star and zero stars respectively, performing even worse than expected.

The five-star winners in this batch range from affordable supermini and small MPV to high-end executive electric cars. Despite having different powertrains and price tickets, all five-star cars performed very well overall in terms of crash protection and crash avoidance. There are stand-out performances from the new Nissan Qashqai in the area of safety assist and the Mercedes-EQS for adult and child occupant protection. Fiat’s electric supermini, the 500e, and the all-new MG Marvel R, also both put in strong performances and achieved commendable four-star ratings.

Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP, says “Bravo to these manufacturers for giving consumers the levels of safety they have come to expect. These results once more make clear that safety is all about good engineering and less about the type of powertrain or price per se.”

As consumers are nudged from all sides to switch to battery electric cars, it is no surprise that some car manufactures are launching more affordable products on the market that can appeal to a wider audience. Renault has been amongst the first to successfully capture the market with the popular ZOE launched in 2013. The “new” ZOE, a facelift introduced in 2020, received several battery improvements but no added safety. On the contrary, the seat-mounted side airbag which previously protected head and thorax has been replaced by a less effective thorax-only airbag, representing a degradation in occupant protection. The new ZOE offers poor protection in crashes overall, poor vulnerable road user protection and lacks meaningful crash avoidance technology, disqualifying it for any stars.

WATCH | VW Caddy crash and safety tests 2021

This video of the VW Caddy undergoing the EURO NCAP crash and safety tests at low speeds shares many insights we often take for granted - like the importance of buckling up.

Often as parents, we buckle up in front because modern cars will ping and sound until you strap in as the driver or front passenger. Quite often, it doesn't do so for occupants in the rear. One car which does this is the VW T-Cross, and frankly, all cars should have this feature.

The video shows tests at low speeds in various situations for front passengers, child occupants, and pedestrians or cyclists.

So no DSG option?

And why is the HP on the 2.0 tdi so reduced from the previous gen?

CAR REVIEW

Volkswagen Caddy Life

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“A massively practical VW that isn’t an SUV. Benefits greatly from its new MQB platform”

The Caddy Life has benefitted massively from the move to Volkswagen’s MQB platform, with proper car-like driving dynamics and better equipment than you’d expect from a van-based lump. It even looks good these days. Okay it might not be the most fashionable thing on four wheels, but it’s an immensely spacious family car for the money. Time to forget all about that crossover you were thinking of test driving…

New Volkswagen Caddy here soon: SA pricing announced

The new-generation Volkswagen Caddy is set to arrive in South African showrooms this February and the carmaker has released pricing for the new range, which is the first to be built around the MQB architecture that’s now commonplace across the VW line-up.

The new model will be sold in three basic flavours: Caddy Cargo, Caddy Kombi and Caddy, with each also being available in a long-wheelbase Maxi variant.

The Caddy Cargo panel van starts at R404 000, while the Caddy Kombi (which is the cheapest passenger model) starts at R412 100. The range-topping variant, which is simply called ‘Caddy’, requires a stretch to R484 200 - see full pricing below story.

Keep in mind that the warranty and service plan situation differs depending on the model. The Cargo and Kombi models are sold with a two-year, unlimited kilometre warranty while the Caddy boasts the usual three-year/120 000km warranty. Service intervals are pegged at 15 000km.

So no DSG option?

And why is the HP on the 2.0 tdi so reduced from the previous gen?
Was wondering the same thing.

We have a 2014 Model, Caddy Maxi. 2.0 TDI DSG (103kw)

The car is such a pleasure to drive, enough power on tap for overtaking, and the DSG gearbox is super smooth.

If this one explodes, I will definitely consider getting another one, but those prices, crazy..
