The VW Caddy Thread

2022 Volkswagen Caddy is officially on sale in SA, and there are plenty to choose from

  • Volkswagen has been teasing us with the 2022 Caddy since last year, but we finally get behind the wheel this week.
  • Various models come to market, with prices starting from around R400 000 up to R600 000.
  • Petrol and diesel versions are available, but there's no mention of automatic gearboxes.
The Volkswagen Caddy is a staple for South African entrepreneurs and businesses. The compact people- and cargo-hauler ticks so many boxes for so many of us that it's often the go-to choice if you want a reliable fleet of delivery vehicles or require safe and efficient small busses to ferry staff or tourists. Take note of the number of Caddy vehicles you see on the road compared to other vans, and you'll know that they're everywhere.

Volkswagen is launching a refreshed Caddy in South Africa to ensure the vehicle's continued success. We'll be taking a bunch of them for a spin around Gauteng to assess what the latest updates bring to the market. Be sure to follow us on Instagram (@wheels24_sa) to see live updates and driving impressions from the New Caddy launch as it happens. Here's a quick look at the various models on offer and what you will pay for them if you pop down to your local VW dealership.

Volkswagen Caddy

The one we're most excited about, and we are sure you are too, is Caddy, the one built for families. It's available with the 1.6-litre petrol engine or the 2.0TDI powerplant, and you can even have it in a long-wheelbase format as a Caddy Maxi (but only with a 2.0TDI if you want the long one). The entry point here is R484 200, and that's still a reasonable price, we think, compared to other cars like the Polo hatchback. The extended length version will set you back R600 400.

Here's the complete list of 2022 Volkswagen Caddy models and their respective prices in ascending order:

  • Volkswagen Caddy Cargo 1.6 panel van - R404 000
  • Volkswagen Caddy Kombi 1.6 - R412 100
  • Volkswagen Caddy Cargo 2.0TDI panel van - R460 600
  • Volkswagen Caddy Kombi 2.0TDI - R476 100
  • Volkswagen Caddy 1.6 - R484 200
  • Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Cargo 2.0TDI panel van - R487 200
  • Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Kombi 2.0TDI - R502 700
  • Volkswagen Caddy 2.0TDI - R573 800
  • Volkswagen Caddy Maxi 2.0TDI - R600 400

Now only? I've seen the new caddy with the nttvw decals driving around town for some time now already?

New Volkswagen Caddy in SA (2022) Specs & Price

Volkswagen has launched the new Caddy MPV in South Africa! See specification and pricing details below!

The Volkswagen Caddy serves as both a family MPV or cargo-hauling business vehicle and the new 5th-generation Caddy is now available to buy in South Africa.

The Caddy is built on Volkswagen’s highly scalable MQB platform and rather than re-designing the wheel for its new Caddy, Volkswagen design approach is more evolutionary. The face of the new Caddy and the grille in particular is much slimmer than before with newly-designed LED headlights and a honeycomb mesh design for the lower grille completing the front-end design. The Caddy’s rear end gets slim vertical LED headlights. The Caddy is offered with either a single large tailgate or dual rear doors as well as single or double side sliding doors. These doors can also be opened or closed electrically if you wish. Optional features include a panoramic sunroof, removable tow bar and 16-inch Wien alloy wheels. A total of 12 body colours are available to buyers.

The Caddy is now offered with a new naming convention including Caddy, Caddy Maxi, Caddy Kombi, Caddy Maxi Kombi, Caddy Cargo and Caddy Maxi Cargo.

Summary

The new Caddy’s biggest achievement is that it feels considerably more car-like to drive compared with its much-loved predecessor. With the seats in or out, practicality has been improved through the provision of more harnessing points, which make it easier to remove and re-install seats. The overall payload has admittedly been reduced with the shift to a unibody platform, but the space inside is more usable/practical than before.

As a working vehicle, the Caddy will appeal to buyers who seek the strong backup network that Volkswagen offers in South Africa, while the unfussy drivetrains promise to deliver many, many kilometres of loyal service.

If you’re looking to procure a Caddy as a lifestyle vehicle, the lack of derivatives with an automatic transmission might not be ideal, but the manual ‘box doesn’t require any real heavy-lifting to use. The Caddy is sure to store all your surfboards, mountain bikes and family members in a package that looks trendy when parked at the beach… or in the school parking lot.

DRIVEN | A better double-cab? VW's new Caddy Maxi proves more compelling than expected

- Range-topping R600k Caddy proves fun to drive despite its workhorse character.
- 2.0TDI pulls like a freight train but can return fantastic fuel consumption too.
- Enough standard features to keep you and your family safe and comfortable.

Worth the money if you prefer something different

The Caddy will appeal to so many people for different reasons, but we approached it as an alternative to a family vehicle, and for that, it shines. You get so much space inside (remove all its seats, and it'll easily swallow a Euro pallet - 800mmx1200mm). But more importantly, it drives like a car, not a van, which gives us confidence that you'll quickly get comfy as a driver. Yes, there's body roll, but if you respect its dynamics, you'll enjoy its smooth-riding nature.

The sliding doors make it such a breeze to get in and out of the cabin, considering how poorly people seem to be parking at malls and shopping centres these days. If you're with children, you'll like its large spacious environment. The kids will love its big windows, and the Apple CarPlay multimedia (on our car) system can keep them entertained on those long road trips.

DRIVEN: New Volkswagen Caddy covers all the bases in style

With decent safety features, build quality and tech the Volkswagen Caddy covers all the bases whether you’re looking to cart packages around or go on a family excursion. And as I said previously, it’s a worthwhile alternative to the usual suspects.

The Caddy and Caddy Maxi passenger derivatives come with a three-year/120 000km warranty and a three-year/60 000km service plan. The Caddy Kombi, Caddy Maxi Kombi, Caddy Cargo and Caddy Maxi Cargo come with a two-year/unlimited kilometre warranty.

Into the details – Volkswagen Caddy Kombi 7-seater 2.0 TDI 6 speed manual

The rear doors slide along aluminium runners which starkly protrude from the blue tinged bodywork and don’t seem too well integrated with the overall side profile design of the MPV. But then again it would be unfair to compare its utility to that of more refined minivans or SUVs that demand a higher price. The split rear doors, equipped with their ability to lock in place at either 90° or beyond provide ample functionality although the vertical door split does inhibit the driver’s vision in the rear view mirror somewhat.

Equipped with other amenities like a front fog lamps and cornering lamps, front and rear park distance control and cruise control with a speed limiter, the base price of R476 800 was elevated to a total of R521 570.

Build your own here.

It will always remain subjective but this Volkswagen Caddy Kombi, and other MPVs like it, may very well be the perfect addition to a two car garage that already has a sporty coupe parked inside.

REVIEW: New Volkswagen Caddy Maxi is a versatile family car

VERDICT

The new Volkswagen Caddy is a very decent evolution of its competent predecessor, offering loads of space and versatility for the money and decent road manners.

Sure the cabin does feel a bit utilitarian in places, but that’s perfectly forgiveable given the practicality on offer.

It’s a great all-rounder, but its biggest problem is the lack of an auto gearbox option, which is something VWSA will no doubt solve as soon as the supply situation improves.
