The VW Up! Thread

Just did a test drive in the up! It is really comfy and I really enjoyed it. Sure, it is a small little engine, but if you shift down it gets pretty zippy. I think I might end up going for it.

Just a note on the pics that is in the OP. Our version does not have the same dash. The one we get here for some reason has manual knobs still for the fan etc. Dissapointing cause I really like the dash in the pics that OP posted. :(

Rotary knobs are Climatic AC. The buttons are for Climatronic AC, which I do not think you get here. But you can ask the dealership.

Ooooh soo exciting!

Volkswagen Up! GTI set for 2018 introduction?

Volkswagen Up!
Volkswagen is indeed working on a GTI-badged version of the Up! city car (standard model pictured here).

It’s been on the cards for a while now, hasn’t it? In fact, earlier this year we touched on rumours it would indeed happen. And now it has been all but confirmed.

Yes, the Volkswagen Up! GTI is expected to go into production early in 2018, which would place it neatly atop the recently refreshed range.

The latest news comes courtesy of AutoExpress, which drove yet another prototype of the warmed-up city car (in five-door flavour).

According to the British publication, the Up! GTI will employ a tuned version of the brand’s 1,0-litre three-cylinder TSI mill, in this application worth somewhere in the region of 85 kW, allowing the 880 kg tyke to hit 100 km/h from standstill in around 8,8 seconds (with a manual transmission fitted).

Interestingly, those performance figures are not too different to the Mk1 Golf GTI’s statistics from some 40 years back…

Volkswagen is planning on introducing a new up! GTI model in 2018!

The Volkswagen up! city car has been a sales success in South Africa since it was launched almost 2 years ago. The facelifted up! was introduced recently but reports are indicating that Volkswagen will be ‘spicing up’ the range with a new up! GTI model due to make its debut in 2018.

If there is one car South Africans love, it’s the Golf GTI and it’s hardly surprising that Volkswagen will introduce an up! GTI. Just by virtue of adding GTI lettering to its name, the popularity of the up! is bound to increase as a result.

Key details

Much like the Golf GTI, the up! GTI is likely to feature sportier styling that sets it apart from the rest of the up! range. The red exterior detailing seen on the Golf GTI is likely to appear on the up! GTI and you can expect sports seats, a sports steering wheel and sport pedals transferred into the new model.

A GTI model, however, means nothing without performance and the up! GTI will still be fitted with a 3-cylinder, 1.0-litre engine, but power will be tuned to 85 kW (current up! offers 55 kW) with a manual gearbox driving the front wheels. Although 85 kW might not sound like much, with a kerb weight of only 880 kg, a favourable power to weight ratio will ensure perky performance and the zero to 100 kph sprint will take approximately 8.8 seconds.

I can only imagine how much more fun an extra 30kw will make the Up! feel.

Super tempted to get one in 2018.

If you're a dwarf.

Not at all. I skipped 'round Jo'burg in one for a few months, and my 6'4" frame was more comfortable in the up! than in a Vivo. I'll grant I took up a disproportionate part of the interior, and I would only have been able to accommodate a double amputee behind me, but still. :p

We’ve already reported on the upcoming Volkswagen Up! GTI, Tiguan Allspace and Arteon. But now the Wolfsburg brand has released footage of these three vehicles undergoing testing here in South Africa.

The production versions are set to make their respective debuts at various points through 2017.

VW, like many international automakers, routinely performs hot weather endurance testing near Upington in the Northern Cape. And that’s where this footage was filmed.

So, what are we looking at here? Well, the Up! GTI employs a tuned version of the brand’s 1,0-litre three-cylinder TSI mill, in this application worth somewhere in the region of 85 kW, allowing the 880 kg tyke to hit 100 km/h from standstill in around 8,8 seconds (with a manual transmission fitted).

The Tiguan Allspace, meanwhile, is essentially a stretched version (by 110 mm) of the manufacturer’s popular Tiguan, complete with the option of seven (as opposed to the standard model’s five) seats.

And the Arteon? Well, this four-door model will replace the CC and slot in above the Passat range.

Interestingly, Volkswagen SA tells us that the Up! GTI and Allspace are currently not being considered for local introduction, while the Arteon is…
