Why Swapping Our POS Audi TT For A Volkswagen Up Was The Best Decision

After giving up fixing my girlfriend's old Mk1 Audi TT 22 BAM and replacing it with an Up, I've decided it was the perfect decision

I've just bought one.

As some of you may know I had an F30 BMW 320D which I sold as I have been working from home since the beginning of lockdown, and barely drove it. So I was on the hunt for something in the R120k mark and the Up! ticked all my boxes, cheap, fun to drive, decent spec and did I mention cheap?

I've got heated seats, electric windows and mirrors, bluetooth, cruise control, obc, fog lights, a/c, alloy wheels, 4 airbags, abs with esp, park distance control and a pretty decent standard sound system. It's a 2015 model with 60k on the clock and FSH.

I get the car, insurance and fuel all for R3.5k a month less than my beamer cost me, and since I sold the beamer to my sister, it's still in our driveway for me to drive whenever I want.

Honestly it's a great little car, drives well and so far I am averaging 3.8 l/100km so I am chuffed to bits. I have a plan to emigrate in the next 18 months so this will do for now.

SEE | Be careful not to slam it - These small passenger cars make use of glass boot lids

• Glass boot lids are most commonly found on small city cars.

• Toyota, Peugeot, Volkswagen and Honda all have their own models with 'fragile' boot lids.

• The rear bumpers are generally bigger to compensate for where the boot is normally situated.

All vehicles have it, and some are bigger than others - it could be a plethora of things, but the answer to this short-lived riddle is a boot.

For prospective buyers where space is a priority, SUVs and sedans are the stand-out choices. Most boots are made of the same material as the body, for obvious reasons, but some were designed a bit differently. Glass boot lids are most commonly found on some small city cars, with the likes of Toyota, Peugeot, Volkswagen and Honda all having their models with these unique sections. The rear bumpers are generally bigger to compensate for where the boot is usually situated. Instead of a rear window within the body, the glass boot lid is one complete piece.

It definitely improves the aesthetic appearance, but caution must be taken not to slam the boot too hard or receive a knock from the rear from a vehicle with higher ground clearance, as this could shatter the entire boot lid.

Vehicles have undergone fascinating evolution over the years. Whether it be doors that open vertically, engines situated right behind the driver or headlights that have their own wiper blades, upon a time, it was considered a masterstroke. Most cars have metal boots that form part of the body, but the kind found on these small hatchbacks are consist entirely of glass.

Volkswagen UP!

The UP! first came onto the local scene in 2015 and sold over 4 800 units. Unfortunately, it is no longer sold as a brand-new model in SA, with the popularity of the Polo and Polo Vivo a direct contribution for this.

Though not the fastest with its three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine that generated 55kW and 95Nm, it returned an impressive fuel consumption of 4.6-litres/100km.

That glass boot is surprisingly strong. Had quite a few butt clenching moments already when the kids slammed the boot. Still going strong 135k km later.

If electric cars werent stupid expensive in ZA and the infrastructure was 1st world, I'd totally have this or the e-UP for my daily runaround.
Small, enough range and practical. Approved.

Used buying guide: Volkswagen Lupo GTI

Highly capable, desirable and rare, the hot version of VW’s millennium city car looks a nailed-on future classic. We urge you to get one while you still can

Long before the Up, Volkswagen had a city car called, equally bizarrely, the Lupo. Launched in 1998, it was a well-built, practical and inoffensive thing that sat below the larger and more expensive Polo.

Small it may have been, but the Lupo had big ambitions. For example, the 3L version could, thanks to special lightweight body panels, a three-cylinder 1.2-litre diesel engine and an automated manual gearbox, do up to 94mpg. In fact, one was driven around Britain in 2001 and achieved almost 120mpg.

Coincidentally, that same year, the little Lupo once again demonstrated its appetite for world domination with the addition of a GTI version.

This pocket rocket was powered by a 1.6-litre 16-valve engine producing 123bhp. That output may not look so impressive today, but the Lupo made every horse count by going on a weight-reduction programme. Off came the steel bonnet, front wings and doors to be replaced by lightweight aluminium items, cutting the kerb weight to 978kg.

Yet it was no spartan model: all the GTI appurtenances were there, including bi-xenon headlights, 15in Bathurst alloy wheels, a twin-exit central exhaust, colour-coded fittings, chrome-ringed dials and figure-hugging sports seats. It was also fitted with uprated suspension, lowered by 20mm and disc brakes all round.

Build quality was impressive. Viewed today, the shutlines are millimetre-perfect and everything remains tough and well anchored.

I have always wanted one of those, I moved to Gibraltar recently and have been scouring for one, think I'll get a £12 flight to London, buy one that side and drive it back home through Europe one day lol.

Nearly new buying guide: Skoda Citigo

Cheap, practical and fun, this is the cream of the city car crop

Cute, pert and cheap on the upkeep, the dinky Skoda Citigo (subcutaneously the same as the hugely impressive Volkswagen Up and Seat Mii) is a fun and surprisingly grownup city car that was a huge success from its launch in 2012 to its death in 2021 and is now a bargain used buy.

For the first seven years of its life, it was a pretty conventional petrol-engined car, with a naturally aspirated 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit making either 59bhp (the 60) or 74bhp (the 75). They came with a five-speed manual gearbox or, for a little extra, an automated manual (ASG).

A Greentech version with a stop-start system and eco tyres even pushed CO2 emissions below the magic 100g/km marker.

VW Reportedly Bringing Back The e-Up As Demand For Cheap EVs Soars - Inside EVs

Reports from Germany claim the VW e-Up is coming back in mid-February with a starting price of around €17,000 after local incentives

volkswagen-e-up-at-the-2019-frankfurt-motor-show.jpg

Volkswagen puzzled everyone when it pulled the plug on the e-Up in 2020, despite the fact that sales of the electric city car were going great and an increasing number of European governments started introducing EV incentives.

At the time, German media reported that the e-Up was not designed for high volumes and selling it with discounts was not profitable. Rumour had it that VW lost €4,000–€5,000 on every e-Up and e-Golf it sold.

Mind you, it looks like the automaker may have changed its mind now that cheap EVs like the Dacia Spring are in great demand across Europe.

VW has decided to bring back the e-Up to plug the gap until the 2025 launch of its production ID. Life model, Germany’s IT news website Golem reports.

The all-electric city car is likely to be relaunched in mid-February, according to the same source.

According to another report from Automobilwoche, the first VW dealers are already putting up lists for prospective buyers of the e-Up.

The above reports make no mention of the VW e-Up’s siblings from Skoda and SEAT, the Citigo-e iV and Mii Electric. These rebadged versions of the e-Up were also retired in 2020, but the chances of them making a comeback are not great.

I have fallen in love with this car over the years and I am planning to get one this year.

I never gave it a second look until I wanted something cheap. I got one and it's one of the most impressive packages, the road holding is great, it's light on fuel and comfortable on longer journeys. I would look out for one with some mod cons like heated seats and cruise control and bluetooth :)
