The wait for activation - can someone explain it

The complex im in is finally live and fibre modem/routers were installed. The techie while installing the modem/router told me that he has already activated me and nothing for me to do but just wait 6-12 hours before being able to use the internet.

Can someone explain this wait and what is actually happening in the background? ... was told no human intervention in this process and its automated

So i just want an education lesson
