New “Walking Dead” Series Will Be “Startlingly Different”

EW caught up with “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman who is finally talking about the spinoff, codenamed “Cobalt”. What he says is exactly what I wanted to hear. But before we get to that, here’s a very vague description of the arc.


“I will say that this is going to be a show about family,” says Kirkman. “But it’s going to be a show about a different type of family that we haven’t explored in The Walking Dead thus far. So what we’re trying to do with The Walking Dead spinoff is keep the story as familiar as possible for people that love The Walking Dead, so you’ll get the kind of things that you expect from a Walking Dead story. But, at the same time, we’ll want to tell these stories in a completely different way with completely different people in a completely different setting that’s going to make for a fundamentally different show.

I hope so. A few episodes have really dragged on. I like some of the stylistic changes in S5 (some of the camera shots) but yeah - kinda slow.
 
Leaked Script Reveals 'The Walking Dead' Spinoff Is A New Take On The Zombie Crisis

Sorry, Rick Grimes. It looks like you're going to have to sit this one out.

"Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman previously said the "look and feel" of the new spinoff series would be "startlingly different," and now we know why. A purported leaked script, obtained by Bleeding Cool, shows that the spinoff will at least start in the early days of the zombie crisis. (Excerpts of the script were removed from Bleeding Cool at the request of Rainbow Media.)

The alleged script -- using the working title "Fear the Walking Dead" -- starts with the C.D.C. attempting to prove the "dead do not walk among us." The leaks seem to indicate that the world is not yet in the state of chaos it's in after Grimes wakes up from his coma in "Walking Dead," and everyone is unaware of the magnitude of what's going on.

Among other things, this take on the zombie crisis could potentially allow actor Noah Emmerich's character, Edwin Jenner, a C.D.C. doctor, to make a return. Emmerich told The Hollywood Reporter he'd be into reprising his role and that there's "definitely a lot more to find out about Dr. Jenner." Kirkman previously admitted to THR that destroying the C.D.C. in Season 1 of "Walking Dead" was his biggest regret from the series.

In regard to what you can definitely expect in the new spinoff, the "Walking Dead" creator told EW that the new series would take place in Los Angeles and "be a show about family." He added, “It is all new characters, all new events and all kinds of crazy stuff.”

"The Walking Dead" spinoff series is reportedly set to premiere later this year.
