The Windows Calculator is now open source

Great! Now can someone please fix that 1px misalignment of the buttons?

Still nowhere near as good as calculator ++ (ios / android). Windows calc has always felt finicky, like I often feel like I click the wrong thing or get the wrong result & have to repeat. Might also just be that using a mouse with a calc doesn't feel as good as typing it it.

They should do this with Paint since its has been retired then unretired, well basically not valued by MS - meanwhile everybody else wants and still makes use of it.

Who uses a mouse instead of a keyboard? :p

Windows calc makes it into my recommended/quick launch start menu due to frequent use...

There are way better opensource calculators out there,. There are also better apps than paint...

You don’t understand open source do you?

  • Community Involvement in bug fixes and enhancements
  • Forks
  • Education
  • Ports to other platforms
  • Non proprietary

It will essentially never die now

Even more importantly, it’s proof again that is a different Microsoft that was a decade ago .
We are talking about a overrated calculator here.....

Making their calculator open source is proof what exactly? Maybe if it was Word or some big part of Windows but calc? I don't buy it.

I find that hilarious. The overrated calculator of all things is "proof again that is a different Microsoft that was a decade ago":ROFL:

Microsoft is "different" for sure. Adverts in your OS (at least for now you have the option to switch it on or off.). Different. Sure! Opensource calculator.... uhm okay.

I can imagine the conversation went something like this:

"Okay brilliant money making team, we are getting too much attention for funding weapons and selling our clients privacy! People want open source! Let's do it! Any ideas? ............. Come now, not all at once"

/a hand slowly raises at the back

"Uhm, sir, uhm, uhm, what about, uhm, we make Paint.... **cough cough**... the calculator open source?"

"What calculator.... Oh! THE CALCULATOR! Brilliant! A bonus coming to you head of Advertorials and Other Intrusive Communications! Calculator opensource it is! Let's make Microsoft GREAT again!"

Maybe Calculator is not significant, but Microsoft are beyond having to still prove that they love Open Source:

Let me bring you up to speed with some major tech from Microsoft that has been open sourced in the last couple of years:

  • Visual Studio Code - one of the most active github projects and fast becoming the most widely used IDE
  • .NET. Core - runs on Windows, Mac and Linux
  • TypeScript - used in Angular web development
  • Xamarin - Cross platform developer tool supporting about 10 platforms
  • WPF - Legacy presentation framework for Windows , but making it open source means that other devs will take it to other platforms.
Related to Microsoft and Open Source:
  • Since buying Github, Microsoft has made private repositories free.
  • You can use Azure DevOps for free for Open Source Projects.

Have you heard of Visual Studio Code and .NET Core?
Did you know that they are also Open Source products by Microsoft on Github?
Did you know Microsoft have almost 3000 repositories on Github?

Yeah thought not , keep on trolling.
