The Witcher 3 Official thread

im looking to get into gaming again after almost 12 years of no gaming pc's or consoles.
This seems like a good game to kick it off, is the PC or PS4 version the one to go for?

Keeping in mind i will need to purchase hardware to go along with it all

Definitely PC if you're going to be buying a proper machine anyway.

PC but your initial outlay is gonna be a lot more than a console. Do you have a budget in mind?

Dont really have a budget to be honest.
Was looking at some gaming PC's, seems I need to spend about 20k, which seems somewhat steep vs console of 8k with controllers.

My other concern is PC's constantly need upgrading, a console will always play new games brought out for them in the coming years.

I did buy witcher 1 and 2 on steam now and playing witcher 1 on my laptop. (by playing i mean watching the intro movie :) )

No you don't have to spend R20k, you can get something for much less that will still kick ass at 1080p resolution. I built a pc in feb for <R10k that will kick any console in the panty.

You don't need to constantly upgrade either, new games might come out with higher requirements but that does not mean you have to run them at max settings, your current system will still play them at higher settings than a console anyway. If you get a decent cpu, 8GB ram, new gpu then you will be fine for a good few years and should you wish you could just upgrade the gpu down the line as that's what does most of the heavy lifting.

If you're truly buying an entire gaming rig from scratch (which is weird, what PC do you currently use?), I would recommend going for broke and getting the very best you can manage.

A gaming PC is also a PC, and it will be great for daily use with a fast processor and big monitor. If you get fast hardware now, it will last for many years longer than weaker hardware, and the experience throughout that time will be superior to that which weaker hardware can provide. I last upgraded 2 years ago, and the upgrade before that was over 4 years prior. You don't have to buy enthusiast hardware - rather at the point of diminishing returns. So i5 processor, 8 or 16GB RAM (easy to upgrade anyway), SSD, decent gaming M/B and a graphics card that costs at least R3k. I would recommend a 27" monitor too. A few years down the line you can breathe new life into the machine by overclocking and watercooling the CPU.

The cherry on top is that going this route will actually save you a considerable sum of money in the long run. Firstly, you won't have to spend money on hardware for years. But secondly and of most significance, PC games are hugely cheaper than console games. You will probably break even (compared to what you would have spent on console) in the first year alone. Steam sales, Humble Bundles, the G2A Marketplace etc. will save you crazy money. I just preordered Batman: Arkham Knight for R335 on G2A. It's R760 to preorder on console on Takealot, and that's a good price. That's nearly half a thousand Rand saved on a single game. Other new games are a similar story.

So where's the cheapest place to pre-order the game? I don't mind downloading.

The only thing I've upgraded on my PC in the last 5 years is my GPU and it should still be fine to run TW3 (Not at max level but should be fine)

Friend of mine a few years back tracked his spending on his ps3 vs his gaming pc, and ended up spending considerably more on the console. If you buy a game a month, using your example of R760 for a preorder, that's R9120 a year for one game a month, tack on a few hundred rand if you want to do any kind of online gaming and extras/dlc here and there that would be free on pc.

A console is only a saving if you're incredibly casual and play a handful of games a year.

How about if you use the rental options from places like BT games?
Or do they have garbage games

Seriously, a console is not worth the extra spend by any means.
Just take the plunge and get a pc with steam, you'll be happier for it.

That's not even a comparison. I don't think BT Games even offer rentals any more. Even the handful of DVD rentals that offer games cannot provide anywhere close to the same service of owning your own games.

You'll never be able to play online, you'll never be able to instantly fire up a favourite game on a whim and you'll be forced to rush through games while they're in your possession. And many games will require hours for downloading updates. You'll also never be able to play DLC because it would be mad buying any for a game that you don't own. And obviously you'll be limited to a tiny selection of games.
