Xiaomi CEO posts cryptic teaser ahead of the company's 15th anniversary

Xiaomi is turning 15 soon, and ahead of that the company's CEO, Lei Jun, has posted a cryptic teaser image over on X today - see below.

It's clearly car-related, the tire tracks are a dead giveaway. But what could it be? Feel free to speculate in the comments.

Xiaomi SU7 electric sedan exceeds delivery target

The electric vehicle division of Chinese tech giant Xiaomi, announced the results for its debut model SU7. Surpassing even its revised delivery target, Xiaomi has sold and delivered over 130,000 SU7s in the year of its launch, a significant achievement for a new entrant in the competitive EV market.

The SU7 was unveiled in December 2023, and it began deliveries in April 2024 with three trim levels: Standard, Pro, and Max. Prices range from RMB 215,900 (€26,600) for the Standard to RMB 299,900 (€36,900) for the Max, positioning the SU7 as a competitor to Tesla's Model 3 and other mid-size electric sedans. Deliveries began with the Standard and Max versions, followed by the Pro version in May.

Initially, Xiaomi aimed to deliver 100,000 SU7s in 2024, a goal that was later revised to 120,000 units. Strong demand and successful production ramp-up for the SU7 pushed sales beyond expectations. In November, Xiaomi announced that it had already delivered 100,000 vehicles and set a new target of 130,000 units for the year. This ambitious goal was also achieved ahead of schedule.

Xiaomi EV will soon expand its product lineup with the introduction of the SU7 Ultra, a high-performance version of the sedan, and the YU7, the company's first electric SUV. The SU7 Ultra, priced at RMB 814,900 (just over €100,000), is expected to launch in March 2025, while the YU7 is being readied for a mid-2025 release.

Xiaomi SU7 gets a limited edition fiery red color

Yesterday Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun posted a cryptic teaser on X and today the brand has already revealed what the mystery was all about. As someone in the comments of the teaser speculated, it's actually a new color for the SU7, Xiaomi's first car, which already exceeded 130,000 deliveries in just a few months since its launch.

The new color will be available on January 1 through the Xiaomi EV app, and, as you can see, is veryred. This will be a limited edition color meant to celebrate Xiaomi's 15th anniversary.

The company was founded in April 2010, and so we expect the entirety of 2025 (or at least the first three-four months) to be all about the anniversary.

Xiaomi predicted to sell 250,000 EVs in 2025

Goldman Sachs revised its sales forecast for Xiaomi EV, painting a picture of huge growth and profitability in the coming years. Goldman Sachs analysts, led by Timothy Zhao, now expect Xiaomi to sell 350,000 EVs in 2025 and - wait for it - 655,000 in 2026. A company that was selling phones and funky scooters two years ago has become an EV powerhouse.

Xiaomi's EV journey began with the launch of its first model, the SU7 sedan, in March 2024. Available in three versions – Standard, Pro, and Max – the SU7 is aimed at a wide range of budgets, with prices starting at RMB 215,900 (approximately €27,000) and going up to RMB 299,900 (around €37,900). The company followed up with the announcement of a high-performance variant, the SU7 Ultra, priced at RMB 814,900 (about €102,700).

Xiaomi's second EV, the YU7 SUV, will launch in mid-2025. The expansion into the popular SUV segment is expected to boost Xiaomi's EV sales. The company has also been actively investing in its production capabilities. A new plant in Yizhuang, Beijing, with an annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles, is expected to be fully operational by June 2025.

Goldman Sachs believes Xiaomi's "hero product" strategy of focusing on high-quality, feature-rich vehicles is the key to its success. The bank predicts that Xiaomi's EV business could reach profitability by 2026. This is an industry first, as many EV startups struggle to achieve profitability in the early years.

Xiaomi SU7 outsells Tesla Model 3 in China

The electric vehicle market in China is going through a dynamic shift, with domestic manufacturers like Xiaomi gaining traction against established players. In December 2024, Xiaomi SU7 outsold the Tesla Model 3 - a significant milestone for the new entrant in the EV arena.

This actually isn't the first time the SU7 has surpassed the Model 3 in sales. In the past nine months, Xiaomi's electric sedan has outperformed its Tesla counterpart four times. This indicates either a growing preference for the homegrown EV, or Model 3's latest refresh isn't really working. Tesla enjoys strong brand recognition and has an established presence in the Chinese market, suggesting that customers might simply see the SU7 as a better choice.

The Xiaomi SU7, launched in March 2024, has quickly gained popularity with its competitive pricing and impressive features. Starting at RMB 215,900 (€26,710) for the Standard version, the SU7 undercuts the Tesla Model 3's starting price of RMB 235,500 (€29,000) by nearly 10%.

In contrast to Xiaomi, Tesla recently increased the prices of all three Model 3 variants in China, potentially contributing to its declining sales. Together with the growing competition from domestic EV makers, the price hike poses quite a challenge to Tesla's dominance in the Chinese market.

Take a look at the Xiaomi SU7 in Brilliant Magenta feeling pretty in a parking lot

At the end of last year, Xiaomi unveiled a new color for its incredibly popular SU7 EV, and this was then billed as a limited edition meant to celebrate the company's 15th anniversary (it was founded in April 2010).

At the time we only had official images of the hue, but that changed today, when the following pictures surfaced in China showing it in a parking lot, just sitting there, looking pretty.

While we assumed this would be billed as red, the official machine-translated name for the color is Brilliant Magenta. Just how magenta it looks to you is a matter of personal choice, of course, but regardless, it's a stunning colorway nevertheless.

Xiaomi announces first SU7 recall for over parking assist glitch

Xiaomi EV, the car-making division of Chinese tech giant Xiaomi, has issued its first-ever vehicle recall. The recall affects 30,931 SU7 Standard Edition electric vehicles manufactured between February 6, 2024, and November 26, 2024.

The recall has been initiated because of a software glitch that can disrupt the timing synchronization of the car's parking assist system. This, in turn, can affect the system's ability to detect static obstacles. As a result of this cascade of glitches, the risk of collisions goes up. Xiaomi EV acknowledged receiving 255 complaints related to this issue, with incidents initially reported as far back as November 14, 2024.

The company claims the problem is related to an occasional malfunction in the cloud-based service that supports the parking assist feature. Following the initial reports, Xiaomi EV implemented precautionary measures through the cloud service and introduced additional protection strategies to mitigate the risk.

To actually fix the issue, Xiaomi EV will provide a free over-the-air software upgrade to all affected vehicles. This upgrade should eliminate the safety hazard posed by the parking assist glitch. The company states that the recall and OTA upgrade follow two months of rigorous testing, validation, and communication with regulatory authorities.

This recall is a big issue for Xiaomi EV, which officially entered the automotive industry on March 30, 2021. The company launched its first electric vehicle, the SU7, on March 28, 2024. The SU7 is widely seen as a competitor to the Tesla Model 3.

Xiaomi SU7 surpasses 150,000 deliveries, targets double that in 2025

The Chinese tech giant Xiaomi is making incredible progress in the electric vehicle market. According to official numbers, the company's first EV, the SU7 sedan, was delivered to over 150,000 customers last year. This is a huge achievement for the company, which underscores Xiaomi's fast-growing presence in the automotive industry.

The achievement comes thanks to a very strong December, where Xiaomi delivered over 25,000 SU7s, setting the stage for an ambitious 2025 target of 300,000 vehicle deliveries. The SU7 was only launched in March 2024, but it's enjoying strong demand by consumers and Xiaomi is very quick to ramp up production.

Available in Standard, Pro, and Max versions, the SU7 offers something to buyers on every budget. Prices start at RMB 215,900 (€26,900) for the Standard, RMB 245,900 (€30,600) for the Pro, and RMB 299,900 (€37,300) for the Max. The 20 weeks waiting times clearly reflect the SU7's popularity.

Xiaomi's founder, Lei Jun, showed off the SU7's autonomous parking capabilities in a live call, and revealed the impressive delivery figures. He also introduced a special edition SU7 with a striking red exterior, commemorating Xiaomi's 15th anniversary. This version will begin deliveries in March.

Xiaomi SU7 Ultra hits showrooms

The electric vehicle landscape is about to get a whole lot more interesting. Xiaomi, the tech giant known for its smartphones and smart home devices, is making a bold entry into the high-performance automotive world with the long-awaited Xiaomi SU7 Ultra. This track-focused electric sedan has arrived at showrooms across China, days ahead of its official market launch. Enthusiasts can now get a closer look at this powerful EV before deliveries begin in March.

Xiaomi's official Weibo account announced the SU7 Ultra's showroom debut, with the vehicle being showcased in 112 stores across 42 cities in China. This widespread availability shows Xiaomi is trying to make its fastest EV accessible to a broad customer base, despite the high asking price. The appearance of the SU7 Ultra at Xiaomi's Beijing factory confirms that mass production is already underway, promising timely deliveries.

The SU7 Ultra opened for presales on October 29. Priced at RMB 814,900 (approximately €102,100), the high-performance EV attracted significant interest, receiving an impressive 3,680 orders within just 10 minutes of the announcement.

Visually, the SU7 Ultra distinguishes itself from the standard SU7 with a redesigned front bumper and spoiler, large brakes for enhanced stopping power, and a striking yellow body color complemented by bright "Ultra" stripes. A prominent rear spoiler and a slightly wider body further accentuate its performance-oriented design.

The fastest Xiaomi is powered by a cutting-edge triple-motor system. This powerhouse delivers 1,526 horsepower and 1,770 Nm of torque. Such impressive figures translate to blistering acceleration, with the SU7 Ultra reportedly reaching 0-100 km/h in 1.98 seconds and going onto a top speed of 350 km/h.

To manage this immense power, the SU7 Ultra uses carbon ceramic brake discs, the largest ever fitted to a sports car. These high-performance brakes can withstand temperatures exceeding 1,300°C, ensuring reliable stopping power even under extreme conditions. The result is a remarkable braking distance of just 30.8 m from 100 km/h to a complete stop.

The newly revealed "Cosmic Silver" finish gives the SU7 Ultra a sleek and modern aesthetic. This is, so far, the second color option presented by Xiaomi, following bright yellow. Xiaomi is launching the 15 Ultra in China later this month (perhaps on February 26) alongside the SU7 Ultra performance sedan.
