The ZAR Exchange Rate Thread #2

As a matter of interest, do you invest in those ETF's in South African institutions like Satrix, or do you take it offshore first and then buy there?

Well, the US has an effect on everyone else, if their economy is weak or strong it trickles down simply because they are the world's reserve currency, they control SWIFT and they are the largest economy on the planet..so it's not unreasonable to assign blame to them when there's movement over there.
I know. He just made it sound like it's always their fault, or that they do it on purpose.

Thanks. Been doing EE for a number of years. Was wondering if there's much difference in gains, especially with div withholding tax.

China CPI is now negative - consumer prices decreased in July.
China imports and exports both decreased in July, showing a weak domestic economy and weak western markets.
Our economy is not linked to China

I'm guessing you mean their CPI inflation is negative, i.e. deflation?

You are correct. I am so used to talking to people who use CPI to mean inflation (rather than consumer price index) that I am now doing it too.
Just been Googling about this a bit (haven't been following Chinese economy) and looks like they've been having deflationary issues for a while. I remember as monetary/marcro economics students we watched the Japanese situation quite closely when they were having their deflation issues. It's always an interesting phenomenon to watch play out.

Yes, China's producer prices have been declining for months. Consumer prices finally decreased in July.

Japan and Switzerland are both really interesting examples of long term, extremely low inflation and period of deflation.
