The ZAR Exchange Rate Thread #2

The ZAR fell against all currencies thanks (in part) to Julius' racist rhetoric. Treasonous little Amin.
What other reasons are we looking at here. It took a nasty turn and it’s still going up.

Shorted the rand. Made a quick buck. Reinvesting profits into S&P500 shares when the rand strengthens again.

General risk-off sentiment - primarily due to the USA getting their credit rating downgraded.
So the other damage to the ZAR against all the currencies is due to Julius? Seems a bit extreme. Sorry if I am being ignorant here, just trying to understand how the rand is so volatile at the moment.

It will be generally off risk, I am sure if you look at other emerging market currencies, they likely got the same treatment. Almost nothing to do with anything SA did or anyone in SA said. A big chunk of money is scared and not willing to take on risk so they bolted to safer assets, so dollar strength.

Bank of England also raised interest rates, not good for us

Rand will recover when loadshitting ends. Now if we can get DA into power we might see sub 12 zar again. Although I'm not betting on that to happen in the short term or in my lifetime at least hence being the reason I invest my saving in offshore etf's like Nasdaq and S&p500.

Having the DA in power will be like the whole country being on a taxi strike.

Growing pains I call it.

Yeah blame the US for our shitty currency.
Well, the US has an effect on everyone else, if their economy is weak or strong it trickles down simply because they are the world's reserve currency, they control SWIFT and they are the largest economy on the planet..so it's not unreasonable to assign blame to them when there's movement over there.

As a matter of interest, do you invest in those ETF's in South African institutions like Satrix, or do you take it offshore first and then buy there?
