Could it be that the ZAR is slowly clawing its way back?

only because the FED decided to leave rates unchanged.

If the Reserve Bank decides to leave our rates unchanged as a direct result of what the FED did then the Rand will weaken again- but its strengthening since everyone is expecting the Bank to raise rates.

SOON I WILL BE ABLE TO AFFORD THE COTY 1996.

/Excitement!

Do we know what time the announcement is being made today?

You can bet on a 0.5% hike. That and the impending tax hikes to try and stave off a downgrade may be enough to stop the Rand's slide, for now.

I think the expectation may be for 25 basis point hike. If it's 50 basis points (0.5%) then the Rand may strengthen slightly. Some perspective - last year this time R200k would've got you around $17k, now its about $12k...

they'd need to hike by 100 basis points to convince me they're serious

25 pts to simply counteract the Fed's tightening in December
25 pts to counteract the general decline in exchange rate
25 pts to counteract the direct impact of nenegate
25 pts because once you're at 75 you might as well hike 100 and do it properly

and you are?

Just another South African with most of my investments in ZAR which I'd like not to vanish like dust in the wind because our reserve bank doesn't have the balls to apply proper medicine to zumatello's last stuff-up

... also have debt under control so won't feel the hit of a 1% hike ...

monetary policy cannot fix or undo the problems with fiscal policy, its time to consider reallocating your investments

I think I know the answers to these but just want to see if I am thinking on the right lines

Is there anyway the rand can go back to R10 to the USD anytime soon (like next 2 years)?
(Nope, not any times soon).

If it does and below, will prices go down with it, ie. food?
(A little bit yes)

If the Reserve Bank increases the repo by .25 or .50, how will that affect the rand?
(what was said earlier in this thread)

believe me, what is liquid has been reallocated, but short of taking a decade plus old pension fund early and paying all the related penalties just to reinvest offshore due to regulation 28 locking you into ZARs mostly the only hope we have is for the ZAR to recover some lost ground

agreed w.r.t. monetary policy, but we need some strong short term medicine regardless
