So with the Dollar strengthening, and the Rand falling nearly 20c, we still going down on the Rand/Brent Crude price. :)

Why still so weak vs the dollar but gaining so much against the pound? What is making the pound weaker than the dollar right now?

People moving away from commodities into Dollars?

And why the sudden keenness for dollars? I mean, it's not like their economy is doing well right now...

it's (the economy) doing a lot better than had been expected. in fact it is seemingly picking up again while the Euro and UK economies are showing signs of slowing.

Rand as volitile as the crazy days of January.
5 year worst levels against the dollar...Where to from here?

Also, meanwhile, the oil price keeps coming down, which must at least be a good thing?

Short term yeah.
Long term, as the Dollar gets stronger their trade deficit widens.

We might get the collapse of the dollar and a worldwide depression, let alone recession.

And thats why I want a democrat :)

More doom and gloom thanks to the going under of the world's 4th largest investment bank.

This is what I dont understand... If anything shouldnt the rand be stronger to the dollar? And why are none of the other currencies affected? The rand has fallen against every other currency...

Up to a week or 2 ago, the Rand was acctually surprisingly strong.

Dollar moved from 1.55/1.56 down to 1.40/1.41 and the Rand stayed between R7.80-R8.00.

Dollar not actually doing that badly as expected after trading started this morning. DOW down nearly 5% though! :(

Exchange rate...wtf!?

Hey guys,

Can someone tell me what the hell is going on with the US dollar to Rand exchange rate?

I'm not exactly keeping up with these things but I drove past saslin bank yesterday and I saw it was 8.8 RAND to 1 US dollar!!??

It was like at 6.5 last year, what in the world happened?

I thought the Fifa world cup should increase our rand value by a bit for potential investors?

This damn exchange rate ruined my dec holiday plans

Ha, think again... quite the opposite will happen in fact: government will do everything they can to weaken the value of the Rand, so that more tourists come to SA because of a more favourable exchange rate to them!

The worst is yet to come...

True...:sick::sick::sick::sick::sick:

*Prepares to stay home for the next two years...:(

All currencies down except for Dollar and Yen. The Yen is up as currency speculators who borrow zero interest rate Yen loans and change them into
other currencies are now shifting back towards the yen. This is hitting the already beleagured Japanese economy pretty hard while the Europeans are suffering even more.
