I dont think it will recover much with all the unrest at the moment.

Beginning of 2015 it was around R11.70/US$ long way to go still just to undo the damage of one year ...

Yup. 11.44 less than a year ago.

Going back a year, it doesn't exactly instill a warm fuzzy feeling:

Yep, If we were to look at the USD/ZAR exchange rate at the beginning of the year (January) for the last five years, it looks like this:

2011 - 6.6298 ZAR
2012 - 8.0778 ZAR
2013 - 8.4574 ZAR
2014 - 10.4877 ZAR
2015 - 11.5614 ZAR
2016 - 15.4803 ZAR

Each dollar costs R4 more in 2016 than it did a year before.

Recovering to R11.50 will be the easy part. It's the general trend from 2011 to 2015 that won't be easy to undo.

The key to the Rand's recovery has less to do with what Pravin has to say and more to do with the US Fed interest rate increase pace IMO. Should the Fed maintain rates as is for the better part of the year, then the Rand will appreciate steadily I think. However, if they increase rates, money will flow back to the US and out of emerging markets

I think the speech is very much relevant to the ZAR way more than the Fed hikes.

Our issue is internal

The budget is not aggressive enough IMO. Not enough to prevent ratings downgrade.

What influence does China hold on the markets?
