Yep, of course the Rand is taking a battering, I'm going to the States next month. Murphy's Law...

Yeah, Murphy's Law. Sigh.
I have to pay my daughter's college fees for this semester (at a US college), and of course have to sell Rand. Eina.

I refuse to sell my precious metals. They can have my fiat Rands ;-)

7.89 is the inter-bank rate. Forex shops will rip you a new one though.

Those sources quote a mid rate.
See the Sell Rate here and here. It's eased off to R8.04-ish for those who buy dollars TT/wire (ie who have to wire dollars to overseas suppliers, or pay US university fees).

Oh, I always go with the rate quoted on the financials sites. I could be arsed to look up the buy or sell rates as we do all our deals in the actual rate.

The buy and sell rates are actual rates. Not sure what you mean...?

they are buy and sell rates for individuals. corporates get far better spreads which are closer to what you will see on a site like xe

I wonder just how much of this has to do with the ANC and the YL and Cosatu with all its nonsense?

I'm assuming absolutely nothing.
More likely due to stronger dollar, nerves about Italy and Greece and emerging markets and whatnot
