Things I did not know.

Yea I know that, but the way thingy goes on about it I figured they probably rape young baby elephants for it and harvest it off blackened souls of the dead's hair while singing cumbaya or some crap

1. Who is 'thingy' ? :)

2. "The expense comes from the extraordinary labor involved in harvesting and preparing it for storage. Also adding to the expense is the fact that 80,000 flowers are needed to obtain one pound of Saffron. Spain grows more Saffron than any other nation in the World, with India coming in second. The area of south-central Spain called La Mancha produces the World's best Saffron." http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/190053

In that case people should start watching cooking programs/channels.

Don't worry, there is no stigma attached to not knowing where saffron comes from

...see what I just did there?

:D

Woosh over their heads. 100 points to you good man;)

I've known about it since I was a teen. I saw inserts about it on 2 Fat Ladies & Deliah Smith sometime in the 90s.

You can buy some crocus bulbs & grow them in your garden for fun, they are beautiful. You won't get much saffy from them unless you replace the entire lawn with them though. http://www.ehow.com/how_2104049_grow-saffron-crocus.html

The latin name is Crocus sativa .

@ Peder Vanilla you buy at the green grocer next to La Spiga in Lynnwood. 3 for about R20. And they are always nice and fresh.

are they soft too cause i nearly shot through the roof buying vanilla and it was ROCK HARD!

But thanx allot mila, i spent R21 last time on 1 pod and it was really difficult to use.

Although i though it was a bargain because i had seen it at woolworths for R40 a pod

for those of you who wanna try saffron...you can get it at B-nagiahs in midrand
they reasonably priced as well, there's also a guy in bright water commons that sells it (more pricey here though). my gf uses it mostly for breyani so i'm not too sure what other dishes you can use it for ...

some more culinary did you knows...

capers come from crocus flowers,
cashew nuts dangle on the end of a pseudofruit,
tapioca / sago comes from ground cassava root,
truffle mushrooms are found underground using pigs,
tequila comes from the blue agave plant,
lsd comes from a rice fungus called ergot,
the same bean that yeilds castor oil also produces the deadly toxin ricin,
coriander is also known as dhania (india) and cilantro (USA)
gel coating on soft vitamin capsules usually contains swine gelatine, which is why strict jews and muslims can't eat certain brands
rhubarb isn't dangerously poisonous - you'd have to eat around 5kg to kill you
potatoes, eggplants and tomatoes come from the same family as the deadly nightshade (beladonna)
quinoa is the only edible grain known to contain complete proteins, its value was lost to the world when spanish troops rejected it due to the soapy outer husk
avocados are toxic to parrots

and my personal favourite: carrots don't improve eyesight

LOL. Dude, you don't eat the friggin pod, you cut the pod longitudinally and scrape out the minute seeds.

The are better fresh. When they are hard like candy I struggle to get the seeds out.:o

Peder : corner Lynnwood and Gen. Louis Botha.

that was my exact problem if the pod is rock hard do you even have any idea how difficult it is to cut that pod?

I've cut plenty vanilla pods in my time. It's not a friggin tomato... what did you expect? :D You have to split it dorsally rather than laterally and then slide the knife down. Then scrape either half with the blade. It's a mission but well worth it :)
