Thinking about leaving SA

UK is a terrible country.

US is at least a lot more diverse in it's states. There at least you have options.
But the secret is moving to a smaller, less populated country.

Or just get rich in South Africa and stay in the best places.
We lived in the UK for 5 years (for work). The British have to be the most two-faced, lily-livered snide nation on earth.

as in landscape?

Lush green fields. Amazing small towns. Ponds and rivers/channels everywhere. Forget about London. The UK does not just have London in it. Very deep and rich culture as mentioned by Bokdrol. Seriously, that place is amazing.

Germany: You have to appreciate what that country has done after having to rebuild after 2 world wars. The history is amazing, and the people omg... German people are so warm and friendly. Nothing like SA.

It depends where in Germany though.... North Germany is stuck up and not very friendly. I was there as an exchange student...

Apart from the English people and their snottyness it's an awesome country.

Snottiness? Never picked up on it myself.

If I could convince the missus, we'd be on the plane back there tomorrow.

We've got appointments at the U.S. Consulate in the morning. Maybe I'll have better luck moving us all there.

You missed it as you're one of them :p

Joking aside, they have this uptight, snobbish way about them. Especially in London.
Maybe it's just our accents no idea...

I'm looking at going overseas next year. I drawn to the bigger countries, but I always wonder about places like Singapore etc.

I'm drawn to UK in that if I enjoy it and stay there I can eventually apply to stay permanently. Hopefully get another book!

I'm visiting family in Amsterdam at the moment. Will be in Belgium Tomorrow and Germany over the weekend. I'm considering making a move soon to be honest. For Holland it would probably be Rotterdam, it reminds me a lot of Pretoria. They weather is ****, but in SA im always indoors as well.

There are a lot of things I would like in the US or UK or Australia, but there are important things no money can buy like family, friends, your own culture, sense of belonging etc.

I am still hoping to stay but for my 2 year old I cant imagine things being better for him when he reaches his 20s. Things are still OK now but will it be then?

I actually really like the UK and London. To live in London though you either need to accept that your "home" is going to be a closet, and effectively learn to "live" outside of your home (for many Brits their home is just a place to sleep), or earn a crapload of cash. If at least one of these aren't true, it's not the right trade off for you.

You no longer need to limit yourself to a European lifestyle to go somewhere better than SA. Many non-European developing countries already offer a better life than in SA with English widely spoken. Imagine leaving a sour populace behind you and being greeted by friendly happy, stress-free smiles when you go out. That alone is priceless for your well-being. SA is a broken society with broken leadership. There is no quick fix. There are very few countries like SA, where a 'cold war' is being waged daily against the most skilled of the population. It's a moronic, backward system which makes hillbillies appear cultured. SA is not for anyone who wants happiness.

Really? :erm:

None of that means anything if you get shot or stabbed to death.

And who drives without a seatbelt? Besides it being illegal it's downright idiotic. Same goes for cycling without a helmet.

I'll never understand how someone can think having to wear a seatbelt and having insane serious crime levels can be remotely comparable.

I don't wear a seatbelt unless on long journey.
Ever been hijacked ?

Some very valid points here. You need to be happy where you are. Having to worry about crime is not great and I think that is a factor, where ever you go, just at different levels of course. If I could get into the US, I'd be there already. My chances are pretty close to zero... short of marrying a US Citizen, it's not going to happen. Australia looks good but I worry its too much of a nanny state. So that leaves you with a limited amount of options.

The authorised of the coin, like someone mentioned, is focus on getting rich in SA (Not easy) and moving to one of the best areas. However, you still need 6ft high walls and a decent security system. That sort of defensive living isn't for everyone.

I lived in the USA for 2 years ......coming back was the single worst decision of my life and unfortunately something I regret and have to live with. I do advise if you have the means to go and explore the world and see how different it is and how safe generally people are. Things have spiralled out of control here. Crime. Cost of living . Eskom. Petrol. The list goes on and on. I'm just saying if you have the means and age is on your side make the decision

Wait a minute.. you were in the States for two years and decided to leave the 1st world for a very corrupted, crime-ridden, 3rd world country... why?
If you regret it so much, just go back to the States?
