Third party insurance claims

I was involved in a minor bumper-bashing.

I got all the necessary information together and claimed through my insurance. It was akin to pulling teeth but finally, after nearly two months, my claim was processed. In the mean time I was instructed by my underwriters to provide my claim number to the third party and they then need to go through their insurer to claim against me.

The third party has now contacted me and informed me that they have not heard anything back, and understandably they are frustrated.

Is there anything I can do from my side to try and find out what is going on? What should be going on? After providing the claim number, it is my understanding that his insurer and my insurer would sort it out between themselves.

No, don't get involved, direct them to your insurer, that is what you pay them for.

You, in terms of the policy subrogated your rights to the insurer and therefore cannot interact with the TP.

Just send a mail to follow up as the TP is "hounding" you.

Not your problem if cover is in place.

I know it sounds crap but it is what it is.

The third party must surely follow up with their own insurer.

This.

Op,
Coz if other party makes hectic demands etc then your insurer has a legal team that will then get involved. That is part of why you have insurance...

Still not the OP's problem.
100%, he just points the person back to their insurance. I had the same situation 3 years ago. Lady tried to keep hounding me, told her to contact my insurance she's like but they taking ages. I informed her that's the joys of doing a third party claim instead of going through her insurance.

Thanks for the feedback, folks.

I think I will contact my insurer for clarity on a third party claim and then let the other person know.

The awkward situation here is, as luck would have it, I am acquainted with the person and we occasionally move in the same social circle. This is the only reason why I wanted to see if I can try and move this thing along. Don't need this guy slandering me to people we know because of things outside of my control.

Why would he slander you? Third party insurance claims take ages, this is common knowledge, why would you're insurance rush to sort him out? He should've gone through his own insurance, than they'd do their due diligence and sort him out. From your side all you had to do is tell your insurance there will be a third party claim, supply his details and that's it.
Never ever put a third party claim in, rather go through your own.

Just don't want to seem like I am dodging is all. Its probably just in my head. First claim I've ever had to process, so new territory for me.

As for the bold bit, yep, that's what I've done.

Nope he should realise that once you've handed it over to your insurance and he's put the claim in, he's got to go through your insurance, you're not involved any longer.

Yeah,
Not your fault how your insurer handles 3rd party claims.

AND
in cases where the accident is a shared blame 10/90%, 25/75%, 50/50%, 0/100% the insurer will only cover the 3rd party for the % that the insurer's own client is to blame. So if only 10% is the fault of the insured the 3rd party claim will be paid 10% of their claim/repair.

So peeps, if you have insurance rather let them handle claims for you....

The bold bit...

Keep sending your insurance an email saying XYZ contacted/tried to contact you, please can they liaise with XYZ.

And if XYZ calls, silence the call and let it go to vmail. You're not going to pay for their damage out of your pocket. That's why you have 3rd party as part of your insurance components.

That's why I mentioned your subrogated rights, it's the best and easiest way to slip confrontation.

Yep, seems I am going to experience this as well now.

Third party sent me an email saying he was going a no claim letter route with his insurance.

He is now WhatsApping me asking if I passed this on to my insurer because he hasn't heard anything from them.

After starting this thread I called my insurer for some clarity on third party claims and told the guy exactly what they told me (which confirms what you guys told me); there is nothing I can do when it comes to a third party claim. Its between him, my insurer and his insurer. I just notified my insurance that there was a third party; that there would likely be a claim from them and supplied all necessary details they asked.

Surely this no claim nonsense is none of my business.

When somebody drove into the back of my car I claimed from my insurance. My premiums increased for a few months, until they recovered the money. Then they paid back the increases and my premiums reverted to normal.

It should not be your problem. Your insurance should deal with theirs.

With the claim ID refer him to your insurance, once you've got a claim number it's out of your hands. Him hounding you isn't going to help him at all. He went the no claim route not you.

Yep, already sent him the claim number in two separate emails. He's got everything I needed to process my own claim.

He sent me an email complaining about admin, so I think he is under the impression that he can just sit back. I couldn't even do that with my own claim. I had to follow up with my insurer for my own claim and repairs because they just went quiet for a bit.
