Just a quick personal bit of research, if you don't mind.

How many of you get a speech or lecture from your employer this time of year, usually done at the Christmas party?

Here are gems I have had from years past:

"Count yourself lucky you are getting a bonus. <Competitor's name here> their staff didn't get anything"
[13th check was less than my salary. From an electronics manufacturing company. Busted a gut during the year, gives me a R1000 increase before tax and then has the audacity to ask if I am happy about it. Then took offense when I resigned]

"You can only get a bonus if you get the project out on time" (This while they purposefully put every obstacle they could in my way to getting the project done) [A software company]

"I am angry yes, because in 3 weeks I have to pay bonuses so my costs are double this month, you have no idea what I go through, yet you take sick leave and always out at lunchtime" [Electronics manufacturing concern]

This year I decided I have had enough of the above and told my present employer not to pay me anything extra as I am not interested in the above nonsense, because it does nothing except make me inclined to leave. They agreed!

A classic :)
Why would you tell your boss you don't want a bonus. You have an aversion to money

Are you depressed Koosi, why dont you ask them to decrease your salary while your at it.:wtf:

So you told your employee to not pay you extra, they agree, you continue working for ****ty employee?
If its not working out for you why dont you just leave?

I cannot fathom why an employer has to treat you as if you are a slave. No self respecting person(boss, manager) should ever moan about paying a bonus to his employees and if it is so difficult why does he do it?

My approach to bonuses are exactly that. A BONUS. It is not part of your CTC. You are not entitled to it and is generally based upon your performance and the company's performance.

yip this time of year bosses come with all sorts of kuk excuses:

the company had to pay "extra" tax?

"low sales" followed by a new car the next day?

my holiday house needed renovation?

there was a cock up at the pay master?

some good companies:

one company was great full for your FULL attendance and paid you your full sick leave at the end of the year so that was an extra bonus on top of your bonus :)

another company put money aside every month to ensure you got you bonus at the end of the year :)

That is totally understandable.

But don't put your employees on a guilt trip about it...

Then again i worked for a boss who always moaned about paying my salary.

I would have laughed in his face & print it out on put it up the wall. what a douche!

"low sales" followed by a new car the next day?
Don't even get me started.
I designed a product for a company once. Their sales went up by 56%.
I knew this because I kept track of how many orders I had to work overtime to fulfil and I had a barcode scanner. I could also do a bit of math.

Tells us, there's no increase this year, the company didn't do "all that well" but drives into work with a E55 V8 Mercedes Benz he had just bought, the thing doesn't even have numberplates yet.

These days I do not work for companies that operate like that, and in any case, even though I am dead against it, it appears I might have to follow the contracting/consulting route, it definitely pays a hell of a lot more and you avoid all this crap.

As for the comments about me being depressed, I am not. I just decided this year I don't feel like hearing comments to make me feel guilty about getting it. There is also more to the whole story which I can't type on a public forum. It would make sense if I could explain it all. So rather think before writing the first thing that comes to mind, is what I can say. I have my 13th check in the bank, earned doing part-time work on weekends. A lot of you missed the hidden humour too.

Ummm... no, if you saw the man, met him, you would definitely think twice.

This is the problem with the workforce of today:

They expect a salary just for pitching up for work.
Then they want a bonus for DOING their work.

It seems the tipping culture has spilled over to thje work place.

That depends entirely on whether it is structured as a 13th check or whether it is structured as 12 paychecks and a performance related bonus.

There are two types of 13th check, one of which is an option to load your salary heavily into the Christmas season. So you get 1/12th less each month, but then in Dec you get 2 of your paychecks in one. People must be wary of this as it is actually structured into your CTC that way, some unscrupulous bosses may try to convince you that this is a bonus that they can withhold based on company performance. But they cannot. Also if you ever sign a contract to that effect, then you are mad. It prevents you from being able to leave at any point other than after your 13th check, because otherwise you are losing out big time.

If it is simply a Christmas bonus, then I don't count on it. Try to get them to structure a 50% bonus value into your CTC to start with and scrap the bonus altogether. Not many will do that, but it is worth a try.

True story, back when I still worked at a rather large enterprise I had two titles, each in a separate department, so I largely exceeded in my one title where the other is an on-going managerial position where things happened to stay the same every day and nothing much else than admin. Like you, I pushed the company sales on exportation extraordinarily beyond all expectations.

One day I got called by the COO, where he stated that they cannot keep me in two positions, so I will only continue with my everyday managerial position plus a 50% salary cut… Yikes! To add something extra on these circumstances, I had to train 3 new employees to take over my prior position. No bonuses, nothing. Due to this my managerial position got way behind due to me attending to the 3 others… So I went to the CEO and told him that I will not renew my contract with the company, on which they amended the contract attractiveness 3 times with me, which I concurrently denied.

All-in-all I did as requested throughout my remaining term, also looking at other possible opportunities, but I did stay until year end where the COO got praised and acknowledged due to his great work done by me. Anyway, this happened many moons ago. I still bump into the guy, he know that I don’t like him and I generally never have a problem with any person. The interesting part was that he got rewarded with more than his expected bonus.

Companies have these things in the employment contract.

Ours was recently changed (company being bought out) and from quarterly to yearly bonuses. Also, part of it was due to your personal performance, now it is more based on the company's performance. We will hear in the next few weeks if we getting any ...

This is the problem with company management of today:

They promise performance related bonuses if you complete targets and work hard.
They then re-neg on that promise based on:
global recession
"your department did well but the company as a whole did not make the required targets to allow us to pay bonuses this year"
<Insert your choice of excuse here>

The street runs both ways, it seems that the Capitalist culture of watching your bottom line and making sure the increases and bonuses are assigned in a top heavy way is the current practice.

And you expect loyalty and extra hard workers to be molded in this kind of culture?

I have a guaranteed 13th cheque, bonus is extra depending on performance. Always had decent bonuses/promotions so far.
