Thirteenth Check Comments from Bosses

Reducing the hurt eh? Then why hire the people in the first place. Ah yes I forget, slavery is illegal.

My 13th check is worked into my CTC. And I still get the whole 'you're lucky you're getting a bonus' speech. :P

And that is the **** that I dont accept. I would renegotiate that contract ASAP. You get no tax benefits for splitting your salary like that. You can also calculate the rate at which you get screwed if you ever want to resign.
Resign in Jan, 1/12th screwed. June? 6/12ths. November, 11/12ths.

Different if you were paid every 4 weeks, which works out to 13 evenly spaced paychecks throughout the year. But when your 12th and 13th are backloaded like that, you always get screwed over. I hate hate hate hate hate that payment method.

We get our bonuses in March rather than Dec. So far in my 8 years of working I have never not gotten one although some years it was smaller than other years. Depends on how the company was doing. Used to use it for holidays etc but these days I need it to help pay for school fees etc.

in my view, we should all just be grateful we have a job. 13th/bonus or not.

edit : might be easy for me to say as I do get a 13th cheque at Christmas and performance bonuses throughout the year :o

I am greatful I have a job. I really am.
Just they mustn't come with their 13th check comments... If they don't want to/can't afford it, just tell me that and don't do it. Don't try and deflect your guilt by guilt-tripping me. I did my work and I was paid for it, that's enough.

I got the opposite of a bonus last Monday afternoon - retrenchment letter!

Company is bankrupt, letting a few employees go according to the last in 1st out policy.

Some people can't manage their money so companies force it on them to prevent them starting the year knee deep in loan sharks. Some allow you to save a portion of your salary per month, but you can ask them to pay it any month you want.

I really feel for you. I honestly do. That is not a nice thing to happen. I have avoided it happening several times, I was sharp enough to see it coming and had another job lined up.

People complaining about bonuses, my company does not even want to give people increases. We would laugh our way to the bank the day we get bonuses. I am waiting for next year to push for my increase.

The company I work for has an open book policy. Everyone knows what’s happening in the books, what the profits are, what shareholders get, etc. If the company does well and reaches the set targets for the year, bonuses are paid based on performance. The company tracks how many hours you put in, if you just want to work your 8 hours every day, you’re welcome to but come review time this will count against you. If you work extra hours, say 40 hours for the year, you will get a bonus. You have a choice to either get cash or take the leave in days, i.e.1 week. What’s cool is, this is done bi-annually, not just annually. I have realised that most companies don’t do bonuses anymore or they say performance based bonuses but when the time comes to pay up (after working your arse off), they blame the economy and make you feel crap about the small amount that you are paying. So when I negotiate a contract I make sure that there are some decent incentives, you’ll be surprised what some tech companies are offering these days, extra leave days, free lunches, travel and entertainment allowance, “personal time” (use company resources and time to do your own project) and many other cool things. It’s the small things that count. I must admit that most times I take the extra leave days as this means I can spend more time doing my own hobbies or catching up with the family for the late nights I spend in the office.
Companies should use positive re-enforcement and not make people feel crap about how hard they work. People should feel crap for how little they work. Encourage your workers to do well and they will. There are a lot of people that think they are entitled to a bonus, but that’s NOT right. A bonus is just that, something over and above what you normally would get paid for doing your job. Companies that don't reward hard workers will lose them, if someone feels slighted they won't stick around for long (unless they are into masochism). Do your best and you will be rewarded.

I can understand that if times are hard some companies can't pay bonuses. The problem is when management toots their horns about what a great job they're doing and how well the company is performing and then as soon as bonus time comes around they get lang tande and suddenly they start talking about how challenging the market is and how they need to slash bonuses.

Then this happens for a few years until staff gets used to rubbish bonuses and they become the norm.

You make it seem like companies are doing them a favour. Motivational percentages are probably: 10% motivated by helping EE. 90% motivated by saving themselves some bucks if the person resigns on any month other than the month that they get their 13th check.
