I had a 200meg left on my cap this morning, as told by the bandwith report from the email, I then downloaded 50 megs & then shutdown, I return 3 hours later to find my next download going at 10kB/s, I decide hey lets check the remaining bandwith...50 megs remaining!!! How do I lose 150megs? And why are my downloads struggling to get above 10kB/s and it took 3 tries to load myadsl:confused:

Is anyone else experience similar problems?

The bandwidth monitor is only update once every few hours (or days) it seems. Sometimes it will take longer and a reset of your modem will usually let the BW monitor show the correct usage. However the software that handles capping will cap you almost as soon as you go over 3gigs.

So you might find the bandwidth monitor showing up a bit of cap remaining while you have actually been capped already. Restart your modem and leave it on for a while, then check your usuage again, you should see that you are in fact capped. You probably only had 50megs or so remaining in the morning, it just hasnt shown up yet.

10kb is a good capped speed and happens regularly, that download is probably choking your whole connection so MyADSL would have problems opening on a 64kb that is already running above 64kb.

Notwithstanding your account being stolen etc, Iburst measure bandwidth quite accurately. I have one very important tip in this regard though:

Just before midnight on the last day of the month, YOU MUST LOG OFF. Otherwise the total bandwidth of your current session will be deducted from the following month's account, rather than the current month. And very often this session is quite heavy, since it is the one where you want to use your remaining unused bandwidth.

yup i have had 500Mb deducted once.

You shoould have phoned and demanded an extra gig. Its not really your fault is it? They never tell anyone that you have to logout, and having bandwidth used in the last month count for the next one is an error on their side.

Anyway, on their site they say that bandwidth counts for one calendar month, not one calendar month and then till the end of your current session.

Yeah I had that happen to me a few times before it hit home what was happening, and 3 of those times I had between 600mb to 800mb deducted from the new month even though the downloads were done before midnight at the end of the previous months.

When you say "YOU MUST LOGOFF" do you mean disconnect from the base station?

Yes, disconnect, so that your current session bandwidth usage resets to zero when you reconnect.

If you are logged on permanently (with no disconnects) I think there is some set time of each day (maybe its 2am to coincide with the usage reports) when the bandwidth usage is updated.

Yes I am connected permanently and before they messed around with the base station a few months ago I could hold an IP for a whole month as long as I did not reset the modem or router.
But now it changes by itself sometimes 2 to 4 times a day without me doing anything.

I will do as you said and disconnect before reset on the last day of the month and see if it helps in regards to the BW been "stolen" from me.

I'm sure that will be of great comfort to all Iburst users.

It damn well should be... its the only service that works like it should most of the time...

The logging off before midnight thing is quite a good tip. I had always wondered why at times I would be a few MB down the following morning.

Morning all

Bandwidth is measured against an IP session. All tests done by myself have proven that the measurement of my up/downloads versus the bandwidth monitor are on par.

If you are experiencing some or other weird bandwidth loss please contact me so that I can look into your case.

Cheers

Hi Shaun,

The month-end problem should really be fixed. No bandwidth used priior to midnight on the last day of the month should come off the following month's allowance. Yet this does happen. I've experienced it, and many other users have too. If there is some sytem procedure that resets bandwidth monitor totals, it should be run by Iburst prior to switching over to the new month.

When I complained about this (a few month's ago) to the help desk, I received no response.

Logging off prior to midnight is an effective work-around. But the problem shouldn't be there in the first place.

Big shocker there... I think the reason Shaun has "come back" is that iBurst is once again finding that losing customers aint pretty and realised that they need to stem the tide somehow...

Well, I don't think they are losing customers at all. Far from it, in fact they are struggling to keep up with the demand, as we can see with the strain on some of the basestations.

And yes, an unanswered email sent to the help desk is no big surprise, especially several months ago. But at least I can phone 24/7 now, and be answered in seconds, rather than minutes.

I think the reason Shaun has come back to the forum is because Iburst are heeding the criticism of the woeful support in the past. We know there have been management changes at Iburst over the past few months. We are seeing a number of significant improvements. Their latest efforts should be encouraged, not disparaged.

So, as an Iburst user, I am looking forward to Shaun's response. As a user of another service, you probably couldn't give a toss.

As Iburst is a non-Telkom network provider, I would like to see them go from strength to strength. Indirectly, that will benefit ALL South African braodband users, even you.

Hi AcidRazor,

I would like to know why you comment on the forums here when most comments you have are about ADSL and the often chirp about how rubbish Iburst is? Which maybe true for you, but it’s unconstructive for me to read. Everyone is welcome to complain, it’s the only way anything gets seen or done. But making accusations as in your last comment is not really constructive or helpful to anyone. It's just a back chat comment about a problem someone has. Do you think it might be better to let other people help and perhaps take up less space with your occasional sarcastic comments?
No one can stop you, but I see it as a waste of time. The point of the forum is to have useful information, I don't see it in some of your posts.
If you've got a vendetta against Iburst, go take it up with them and not on here. We all know you are on ADSL. Perhaps you should go visit the ADSL forums instead of trying to score points in here.

As I’ve mentioned in other posts, whatever product you choose depends on your needs. Each solution is suited for different people. Saying one ‘sucks’ more than the other is not going to give anyone an indication of if it’s for them. If I could get ADSL I probably would, the option just is not viable for me at the moment, Iburst is. Try avoid making subjective comments, people stop reading, or it just leads to stone throwing.

The tone of my post is really to figure out what you are trying to achieve? I in no way intend to offend you personally, so please don’t view it in this manner.

What Im trying to achieve is some sort of balance to the outlook some people might have on if they are trying to decide if they want to get iBurst or not. Yea sure, my comments are sarcastic and unconstructive, but it shows any prospective iburst user reading these forums that Telkom is not the only "evil" company out there.

I have the same opinions about Sentech and Vodacom.

I've been burnt by Sentech and iBurst. Hell, I bet they even went as far as to violate some human right that I don't know of. Their billing and support is absolutely incredibly horrible and I lost all respect for them in the way they treat their employees and clients.

Same goes for Mr. Casper at Sentech Helpdesk. He verbally abused me several times because I not only knew more than him about a specific person/technology/situation, but just because he could...

Companies like that should just go and burn in hell, and these forums allows me to be whatever I want to be like without anyone trying to shut me up (except the occassional mod I pissed off)
