Look at Malaysia's HD offerings. They started with HD in December 2009.

".. new high-definition broadcast will initially start with four channels, namely Astro Supersport HD, HBO HD, National Geographic Channel HD and History HD which will be available at launch date, while ESPN HD will start in January.."

Packages available for their clients:

Malaysian Ringit - RM x 2.5 to get Rand

And the best part for last,

"..As an Astro customer you can exchange your current Astro decoder to experience Astro B.yond for FREE.." Meaning you can get the HD decoder for free.

So let me get this right :

DStv has provided a HD service to south african's for "FREE" on subsidised equipment for at least a period of 15 months earlier than some very high-tech international counter-parts. They provide a premium service of content i wouldn't even begin listing for the price of a single super14 ticket or the price of taking a family of 4 to the movies once a week and there is complaints about bending over....

So here is some facts :

1. DStv (Multichoice) has never made a cent on any hardware sold, actually, quite the opposite, all hardware including the HD PVR is subsidised...giving away for free is great but do you really believe in the capitalistic world today anything is given away for free? They recoup their money via subscriptions...

2. The HD channels and services are still free...not only free, free since the addition of 2 extra HD channels.

3. In practice it is a great idea to offer sub-packages, but 90% of subscribers would choose a kids, sports, movie and general entertainment sub-packages which would cost more than a premium (full) package.

4. We don't respect the socio-economic environment that many service providers in South africa operate in, if we look at Pay-TV, the population that can afford it is very small in global terms. Our entire population is only about a ninth of that of the US...and then only 1 in 15 of those are in hte higher LSM groups...

5. If it is a case of "getting scr3w3d", is it not easy for a private group to start a company that is profitable yet 'fair' to consumers ? Should have been very very tempting for competitors when they got their licences until they actually did the numbers ...no wonder that some didn't even get off the starting blocks...

There are some great international services...and definitely area's Multichoice can improve and strive to, but to be as arrogant as to say you are being 'screwed', i'm sorry, you just have no clue !

ROFL - so I don't have to pay R580 odd for access to the HD channels?

BS - You been smoking something ? Must be that good stuff from Durbs !

You work for DSTv ?

A brief response :

1) The equipment only costs DSTv a lot because they are spending their life fscking it up. If standardised equipment was used it would be cheaper, and MUCH, MUCH better.

2) Dream on ! Look at the cost and features of Sky +HD, as well as the OP !

3) DSTv are just screwing the consumers - give them the choice !

4) So you admit that DSTv are just screwing that small group ?

5) Same as 4 !

oh, how long have you been employed by naspers?

maybe he is grumpy he didnt get his bonus this year?

Well, I have just cancelled DSTv, so he is not getting it from me.

I will rent movies and try the new satellite services.

Will miss the Super 14 (or whatever it is called now), but you have to make some sacrifices for your principles (ie avoid being screwed).

@Lemon369

Do you think they will get more subscribers if they increase their monthly price or lower the price?

More subscribers means more sales of their decoders, more monthly payments, I'm sure more money can be ask for advertising since they have a bigger subscriber base.

Heh, they could double their subscriber base if the offered anything close to these two examples.

and this, is what they don't get, because they have idiots working high up.

if they made it R200 a month a LOT more people will be
a) subscribing to DSTV
b) buying decoders
c) watching adverts (so like you said, higher advertising price)

example - 1 out of 5 houses might be able to afford R500+ for DSTV, but 3 or more out of 5 might be able to afford 200 bucks a month...

look, for every 1 person that can afford more than a half a grand a month for TV, I GUARANTEE you there will be 2 people that can afford R250.
so, if they can make R500 out of one person or R250 out of two people, what's the difference? it's not costing them more to send signals from the Satellite? wouldn't it be better to have 500 happy customers than 250 grumpy ones?

yes, they probably need to hire a few extra call centre guys as there are more people with problems,
BUT you have more people buying decoders (that = $), and are able to charge more for advertising (more $)

Personally I would rather have 2 satisfied subscribers, than 1 subscriber who is sick and tired of paying so much money every month

It's the typical SA mentality - "I R good in maths! we charge more so we make more moneys!!!!!111"

BTW, I can afford the R500 per month, but I cancelled because I don't like being bent over !

a lot of people on the forum are canceling, and imagine all the people canceling who do not know about mybb or do not have internet?

i'm sure you would sign up in a flash if they suddenly made it only R250 - but no, they just keep notching the price up every few months...slowly but surely...

can't wait for ODM to come in and finally start taking multichoice subscribers by the thousands every month... :D :D :D
