Idiot cause what? The problem is that those stations get pretty hectic and crowded. Someone could easilly get pushed over by accident. Maybe it is unlikely...but surely very possible. Anyway...I was just wondering about it...thats all.

While most people would agree to help from the comfort of their keyboards in cyberspace... People there clearly disagreed....

To think everybody there at that time were simply wimps would be a fallacy... I think the odds are the guy did something stupid to land himself there... Like fighting with a another person near railway lines...

I'm arguing that this is natural selection at work. How did he come to be stuck in front of a rapidly approaching train?

:wtf: Perhaps you should go read the article again. Unless this poor guy was on his way to jump in front of the train, that was not where he wanted to be. He got PUSHED in there. ;)
 
There's a well known concept in Psychology which helps explain this: http://www.psychwiki.com/wiki/The_Bystander_Apathy_Effect

Basically if there are many people, everyone thinks someone else will help the guy, so noone ends up helping him.

It's easy for people to be angry at the photographer and the other people present at the station, but there is a reason they didn't help him. How do people know what they would have done in that split second? Easy to judge from your armchair.
 
We are all looking at the pic and judging the situation, but what about crazy guy out of the shot? To weigh up the situation in a split second to try and help the poor guy off of the track is one thing, but you could end up with a boot up your jacksie and join him down there.

I mean, if a train track was not involved and the guy was getting a royal beating from the crazy one, it would still take most people some time and courage to interfere and try and help the guy getting beat.

We're not just looking at a snapshot, there are and always would be options to weigh up mentally before taking action. And a split second hesitation is all it probably took I think.

Maybe photographers first instinct was wtf. Second was grab camera, like he always does instinctively, third is 'schit, help this guy. No time for number 4 though.

Makes sense. I would most likely not help if helping is likely to end me as well. But for this dick photographer and this paper to have this photo published, together with who the man is? F.U.C.K them :mad:

What I find fascinating is that there much anger or debate about the guy who pushed him. And even so, why there isn't as much anger to the other bystanders. Fascinating.

Typical of what. The man got into a fight with a bum. This can happen easily. You can get into arguments with hobos and drunks without asking for it. Happens in Bellville weekly. No way to tell when one is deranged and how he would react. ;) Natrual selection. Jeez, really now. What if this happened in Central Park and the guy fell on his ass on the grass? Hmm maybe then it was not natural selection?

Natural selection is about making stupid decisions that ultimately end up costing you your life. Getting into a fight with someone you don't know is risky enough (the guy might have a knife or gun), so what does it make it when you get into a fight with someone that literally has nothing to lose? A nomination for a Darwin award, that's what. All he had to do was STFU and keep walking or ignore the hobo, or even alert the po-po. But apparently this was too hard.
 
He would have had a better chance if he had lay down between the tracks, but not touching the live rail.

Erm... no. Then all deaths can be put down to natural selection. By waking up in the morning and stepping out of your house you should know that danger to yourself increases by a bajillion %....

I agree, this has nothing to do with natural selection. If somebody walked up and shot you in the head, is that natural selection? Because your brain skull wasn't strong enough to withstand a bullet?
