What is a photographer if not somebody that captures a moment in time. The headline and text quite sensationalist though.

I would feel better saving a life than just capturing a moment in time... if he wants to capture death, goto Iraq/Syria etc. There is enough death there to be captured.

Don't think he could have made it if he tried, besides what about the other witnesses?

I suppose you're not sure at the time. What if he was on bath salts or something and threw you over as you tried to help him? Then ate your face(or what's left of it) after the train hit you?

My thoughts exactly, judging by that picture. Obviously it depends on the speed of the train though, but ultimately that man was doomed.

It may or may not be that the photographer is lying about the flash thing. I know I would've gone into a panic at that moment, and would've probably been useless to help, or even take a photo.

And I don't see too much bitching about the crowd that did sweet blow nothing either..

The issue of a photographer capturing an image instead of helping the victim, starkly reminds me of Kevin Carter. The photo that Carter took and which propelled him to fame is without a shred of doubt the saddest image I have seen in my entire life.
 
Yea i saw this **** on sxephil on YouTube. Apparently the photographer was too weak to pull the man up anyway, and he tried using his flash "to indicate to the conductor"

Brilliant pic for someone hurrying to notify someone else that there's a dude on the tracks...
 
I thought pretty much everyone here was against photographers interfering with nature?

We need more options in the poll e.g. I would have wanted to try and help but then realized it would have been futile.

He then staggered to his feet and tried, but failed to get out the way of the train, which killed him — in full view of a crowd of passengers.

It killed him but i'm not sure if he died.

hmm nature (animals) vs saving a human life? They should not interfere when a buck is going to be hunted when a lion chases it etc. Saving a human being is different...


And yes.. the crowd is also guilty not for helping.
 
I think people were afraid they might also get shoved onto the tracks if they tried to help the guy out.

From the video in the Yahoo link the guy is clearly aggressive and probably unstable.

Would I have taken photos of a helpless man on the tracks moments before he died? Hell no!

I wonder why the photographer didn't snap a shot of the suspect?
 
If it was Zumatello on the train tracks I'd be concerned about what f stop to use.

There have been some interesting studies about this sort of thing. Short story is that if there is a group seeing it it more likely that nobody will help.
