Thor is moving to Apple - Random Questions

Of course it does
if you have the money
why do you need such a fast machine anyways?
i read your requirements in post #1 and dont see why you can justify paying so much for an Apple laptop

Wants macbook air.

"Why do you want such a fast machine?"

Sure, the M1 is no slouch, but it's not exactly the epitome of power either.
And that link, even on the Apple page, all they say is a "2.6Ghz quad core i7". No model number, no series name, nothing. Useless.

Agree
And this is why I day drink every day

I give up

Connected via 2x Apple Type-C to HDMI dongles and I cannot get the M1 Air to even acknowledge the 2nd display, even when the lid is closed and it's being used "docked"

If you're needing two displays you're either going to go the displaylink route, M1 Mini or wait until Apple releases new stuff. I saw someone on Carbonite selling one: https://carbonite.co.za/index.php?threads/m1-mac-mini-256gb-8gb-ram.345884/
That is what I figured.

I'm looking at this now:

That said, after I read this article, it seems in this exceptional case it makes a lot of sense to wait for the 14" MacBook since it's a complete redesign.

July is anyway around the corner

IE with the screen limitations 14" will be better than the 13" one I would buy now.

High end m1 air - same as MBP - just without a fan (so will throttle CPU on high end tasks). Also screen is less NITS (brightness) and audio is worse.

Other than that it's a fairly like for like machine.

I'm waiting for the m2 (q3 this year) - as I want more ports / 16".

I am in this boat now -- I will wait for Q3.

in this exceptional case (IE I never get on the wait for the new one band wagon as there will always be something better and newer)

3 screens etc

So might by that time then buy the redesigned 14" & the new iMac since it too appears to be getting a facelift from 2011.

Then my office is converted, I currently have the

Desktop & MSI Laptop & Surface Pro

Will consolidate this into
Macbook 14" replaces Surface and MSI
iMac or Mac Mini replaces desktop

Note 10 contract is up for renewal in August 2020 so will then go to iPhone as well, can't think it will cost much more than I am already paying now for the Note 10.

And then maybe in 2022 add the iPad ?

Get the Pro M1. Because it has fans, it will throttle less but if you don’t need the performance, get the Air M1. It not having moving parts might even mean it will last a little longer.

Also if this matters to you, and you have an iPhone, the integration between Apple devices is amazing. I’m getting rid of my windows laptop for this reason.

For the benefit of the unwashed masses, what can you do with an iPhone / Mac combination that can't be done say with Windows/Linux/Android?

Call/iMessage/iCloud/Safari/Logic Pro etc. Integration. If you use Apples services, it’s a no brainer. I personally use their services all the time so the move makes sense for me

For me it's more a case of, get 30% of my time back for struggling with random Windows / Hardware / Compatibility crap.

I want something that just works, it's been a real schlep of late with random windows issues, CPU goes to 100% no idea why, then upgrade, then reload windows etc so manual so DIY

Sick of it, I want the cool aid life.

If you don't use Apple services then I guess this incentive isn't there?

I totally get this.

1 - My photos are there immediately when I take it with the phone
2 - My notes are there
3 - My messages are there
4 - Continuity with phone calls, websites etc.
5 - Maps being transferred

That is just the things I use mostly - I know some of that can be done, but not natively - you always have to install something to get it right.

Please keep me posted on this.
M1 can only support 1 external display **currently**.
You can also use a recent ipad over sidecar as an additional display.

My suggestion - wait for the upcoming 2nd gen ARM's that are coming soon. While the M1 is excellent, never buy a 1st gen apple.

I bought a 16" i9 last year, and would prefer the M1 - the i9 throttles, fan runs up too much, and is generally a heater on my lap. Didn't have a choice though - i needed a laptop after a home invasion.
