Well, design and the OS just working better is an incentive and depending on your field of work, like mine which is creative, a Mac is almost a must.

You mean R10k - R19k? -> R29k?
An extra 8GB of Apple RAM and an extra R256GB of Apple SSD. I can see it.
For a 1TB machine I wouldn't be surprised if you approach R36k... and that's stupid money for a 13" laptop.

I must admit though, my experience with Windows has improved of late. It kind of works, haven't had any major hassles with Windows on a few years now.
My work is technical in nature, not creative, a laptop is really nothing more than a way to run VS Code connected to a server. From that point of view it really doesn't matter what you use.
Some of my colleagues swear by their Macs. I like the quality of the screens but for software engineering purposes, I don't really see what value they add over my HP which was half the price.

1. Mine was just transferred automagically within 20s. Sure, not instantaneous, but quick enough I think? It was pre-installed on windows and on my phone.
2. Onenote can be iffy, but my test now was about 5s from save on the PC, till I refreshed on the phone. Preinstalled on windows and my phone I think?
3 & 4. This is definitely a weakpoint of windows + android. Share my phone works, but only really for messages. My android apps and photos via phone sharing are iffy on PC. Never tried calling though. Had to install something.
5. How do you mean maps are transferred? Searches on the browser is available on google maps in my recents. Was preinstalled on my phone.
I'll add a #6. Sleep and wake. This is something Windows STILL hasn't gotten right on the same level as Apple.
I've had my fair share of windows issues, but I can't remember when last I had something even semi-serious. Windows 7 or 8 days perhaps?
I never had to take a windows PC to a shop to have it sorted out. The MBP 13 I had couldn't boot, and after recovery I couldn't update the OS so I had to take it to the iStore.

#7. How is OSX's HDR support? In windows it definitely needs some work. Or it might be some display firmware issue. Either way, not exactly the best experience.

I am in this boat now -- I will wait for Q3.
IE with the screen limitations 14" will be better than the 13" one I would buy now.

So might by that time then buy the redesigned 14" & the new iMac since it too appears to be getting a facelift from 2011.
Then my office is converted, I currently have the
Desktop & MSI Laptop & Surface Pro
Will consolidate this into
Macbook 14" replaces Surface and MSI
iMac or Mac Mini replaces desktop
Note 10 contract is up for renewal in August 2020 so will then go to iPhone as well, can't think it will cost much more than I am already paying now for the Note 10.
And then maybe in 2022 add the iPad ?
All the reviews I watched pretty much states that the M1 is great, but with some compromises. 2nd gen tech is usually much much better. If I wanted to go to mac land, I would wait for the second iteration.

You, my friend, are underestimating how lazy I want to be
1-5 I am sure you can get all of those things listed to work one way or the other on windows and android. Windows and windows phone will probably be better. I am still going to have to do some sort of setup to sync my photos/notes etc even if they are pre-installed. If my photos are backed up to dropbox, I still need to log on into dropbox. I need to log one into onenote or evernote etc for my notes. These things work just by login in to my iphone and mac the first time.
On 5, you can do it on android and windows. IIRC you can even push it directly from chrome (if you are log into it) to your phone. It had something like sent to phone option. I don't know if android auto will just pick it up and go with it. I can't see why not though. It is not like Apple is perfect yet, in Carplay, I still have to touch the screen 3 times before it actually navigates to it - the first time I say yes, or go or whatever it must just take me.
You might think, why don't you just take the little bit of time and do the setup right when you get your pc/laptop or phone? (though I think on Android if you setup from the cloud it remembers everything? You shouldn't have to do any setup I would think). But I don't want to for myself, and it makes it easier for the people I have to help like my parents etc. (and on me when I help them)
6 - I haven't noticed, but now that you mentioned it, it does seem so. But I haven't played around with my windows settings yet (something you can see I don't really want to worry about any more)
7 - Sorry, I don't connect to external screens or have a mac with an HDR capable screen. But the website does say the newer models does support them. How well I don't know.

I sleep my pc every day with no issues.
People forget the freedom in choice they have with windows and hardware. It's a trade-off, you can put anything in but the drivers may be crappy and that's on the manufacturer more than Microsoft.

I used an MBP for a couple of months back in 2011 and 2012, and when you open that lid, you are greeted with your desktop. Every time.
When you close the lid and stuff it in your laptop bag, you won't be greeted with a hot bag and a dead battery when you get home or to the office the next day.
With my Dell laptop, sometimes I close the lid when taking it to a meeting, and when I open it, I'm greeted with the Dell logo as it wakes up. Sure, it takes 10s, but it's 10s longer than an MBP does.
My wife's new 2020 model XPS 13 would sometimes not easily switch back on after she closed the lid and stuffed it in her bag. Not easily meaning she would call me and say it doesn't want to turn on.
The hot bag and dead battery is self explanatory.
Don't get me wrong, Windows as an overall package is much better than OSX imo, but windows is far from perfect. At least it was when I compared Windows 7 to OSX Lion back the day.

You still need to log in to iCloud, right?
Just as I still have to log in to my MS account. On an android there is the one extra step that you need to log into your google acc AND your onedrive acc, but just like with an iPhone it's only on setup.
That takes care of OneNote as well, and again only on first setup.
I can also install windows on a new PC now, log into my MS acc, and all my settings, wallpaper, files in my documents and on my desktop will just be there.
I think you are prompted to install office if you have a subscription, so there's a button press required to get that done.
Windows have come a long way since the Windows 7 days.
Maps sounds good if you have carplay. I wouldn't know.

My gripe with boot up/wake up is the the stuff that is forced on by corporate, that has an effect.
I also get the HP logo sometimes after sleeping or a few seconds of dark screens but I recon it's due to me going from laptop+wifi at home to laptop+LAN+displaylink device( with usb kb, mouse and 2 extra monitors).

Yes, I guess I did have to log into iCloud. I thought my user was my iCloud account on the mac like it is on the iphone, but it seems like it isn't.
And macOS doesn't have all the software that most people need. I think windows is still the best bet for most people.
Google maps is still far better than Maps, because you can find everything on it. Maps not so much. Most people with carplay still use it or waze.

I have a MacBook air 2014 version. So far it's been great.
Things to think about are obviously what ports you will need.
There is no HDMI or video port, so I got an adapter for that.
The SSD was only 128GB, so it's not really enough space for both windows and OSX.
But I managed to get by.
I don't store music, photos, etc on it as I use it mostly for work and travel.
If I need something, I can get it from the cloud.
P.S an iCloud subscription is worth the money.
For more space you get a Jetdrive which fits flush with the chassis.

The battery still lasts a full work day without a charge.
Anyway.

It is probably better not to get the first generation of something. I am guessing the limited amount of RAM probably means that they have to use more swap memory. Probably better to wait for the higher models with more RAM to come out.@Thor something to consider:

AFAIK there has already been a link showed to Chrome and some other apps that runs through Rosetta 2 that might be the cause. Don't know what would be the issue on the Intel based Macs. There are a few youtube videos that covered this so far.

Yea, I'm not too concerned about this for now. But I have started using Safari more just in case
@OP I was in the same boat as you but decided to take the plunge for a few reasons:
1) My current work setup is a laptop and desktop, both around 4 years old. While they still get the job done I'm definitely starting to notice they struggle with some things. The laptop is also falling apart even though it is a decent specced Dell - work policy is you can ask for a new one only if it's older than 5 years.
2) I'm not a straight up developer but spend a lot of my time in SQL and also have some projects in Python, both things I can run on macOS. The rest of my work is all browser based on our BI reporting platform
3) I still need Windows for a few things (work related tools) but will use the work laptop and Remote Desktop for that or ask them to set up a development server for me where I can install my stuff
'Buying 1st gen is bad' yea yea, I know. But I just couldn't with my old setup anymore. I figured the worst case is I trade this one in at the end of they year for an M2. Another reason why I settled for the base model as opposed to getting a custom specced one.
Experience so far has been great though, this little MacBook Air flies. I've had some odd crashes here and there (mostly Spotify) and I'm still getting used to macOS after a lifetime of Windows. For my SQL work I use Azure Data Studio. It's not an M1 native app yet (VSCode is though) and I have noticed some weird behaviour like queries refusing to run, restarting the app fixes it. Other than that, no issues so far.
One thing I can say, if you're any sort of developer then macOS has some terrific tools that will increase your productivity quite a bit, check out Alfred:
