Altogether 13,608 people have been arrested since the inception of Drug Watch in Gauteng in June, police said on Tuesday.

Brigadier Neville Malila said in a statement the arrests were made during police operations in the province.

"A variety of drugs estimated [to be worth] R5 million have been seized since the launch of Drug Watch, and we are closing the net on drug lords and [drug] manufacturers in Gauteng province," Malila said.

On Monday, police arrested a 25-year-old man in Krugersdorp for possession of drugs and manufacturing drugs, after police found crystal methamphetamine and chemicals on his property.

Crime Line head Yusuf Abramjee said tip-off's received from members of the public were making a difference in the fight against drugs.

Congratulations, on accomplishing ****all and ruining the lives of thousands.
Now how about getting on with catching some real criminals.

How about arresting murderers and rapists.

I bet 13500 of the arrested are some kids with weed. Well done on the 108 criminals but seriously, that's the least of our problems.
 
Considering they only mention 1 drug dealer / producer bust, thats not exactly a massive fight against crime.

Exactly this.... arresting lots of people with small amounts of weed who aren't dealing and who smoke occasionally.

Well they did their job, it isn't the cops fault our courts are horribly corrupt. I reckon they arrest far more rapists and murderers than we know about, dockets are easily lost, evidence tampering with easy. Killing witnesses etc. So many ways to get off charges as long as you have money to grease a few palms.

Cops for the most part are fighting a losing war, they are capturing and arresting rapists and murderers only to see them released.

Crime line is there for crime, so what do you expect the cops to do when they get a tip, ignore the law? Sadly it doesn't work that way.

Yeah. It's quite pathetic actually.

The irritating damn ad campaign for this pointless crusade probably cost more than that.

Years ago a friend of mine was busted with around R17k's drugs.
The cops put it down as a street value of R165k

That and his lawyer got him off without even getting a criminal record.
 
Sucks to be the police in this country- criticised despite actually doing their jobs...

Oh, I do agree with the sentiments of there being more pressing matters for them to attend to. But better them doing something, rather than nothing.

The problem is they're not actually "doing something"... not anything positively anyway.
The idea that drug wars cause way more harm than good isn't just a well informed conclusion anymore, it's almost down to a science these days. It also shows that none of the people in charge of the resources to fight these wars make even a modicum of effort to understand and implement the alternative (and way better) solutions out there.

In a country like SA where crime is one of the biggest issues we face it's even more important to get crime prevention done right. For places like the US getting it wrong means it's a big expense, for places like SA getting it wrong becomes a national crisis.

I don't disagree with you. But as you mentioned- the real issue sits at a higher level than the police force.

Agreed. Which is why I don't afford them a single inch of credit when these statements are made in the media by the big boys in charge.
