Three down, Telkom to go: MWEB peering progress

Don't hold your breath. There were never going to be price decreases as a direct result of " free peering". MWEB did a great selling job to convince people they're doing all of this for the "benefit" of SA consumers.

It's good to see the big boys are now peering locally again (i.e. they're just back where they were before MWEB's actions), but what about all the smaller ISP's who cannot afford to peer directly with MWEB and used to peer via SAIX? Are their subscribers condemned to perpetual cr@p latencies?

I have said a number of times that if MWeb were successful they should put their money where there mouth is. I don't think that this will ever happen. They have played these lists to the T. An absolute PR scam if you ask me.

Nice that performance will be better but the principal is questionable.

Good morning MyBB :)

Have a look here for WA and MWEB peering updates.
Should have something sorted asap for you guys!

The hardware has arrived. There are however a few more hold ups outside of our control but staying on top of it.

Hmm, perhaps mentioning that I was with Mweb wasn't the smartest move when applying for my new line (which STILL hasn't been installed yet)

So everyone besides Mweb are still paying Telkom for peering?

This whole thing would work if it wasnt just mweb.

At the start of all this I also thought savings to the users are in order, but now after thinking about it I am disinclined to put pressure on MWeb to lower prices because of it.

Considering the negligible amount of local content here in our country the savings can not be major. In my mind true open peering is there to promote more local content. It used to be too expensive to host local content. Once that area gets up to scratch ( local WoW realms, download mirrors for sites like tucows/steam, etc.) then maybe it will be realistic to lower prices.

The developments that I think will really affect internet prices are BI and WACS. Once both are finished, linked and made use of then I think we will really start seeing lower internet costs. Face it - If MWeb does not lower prices at that point then somebody else will... But they are clever okes at MWeb.

I also want to add: I was having trouble with my WoW latency this weekend. All I had to do was call MWeb and they told me how to fix it. One fix - No more problems. Now that's service.

I think this was a good move by MWEB
Even if it does not bring down pricing for our connections it will just improve local speeds
Think about it this way MWEB is currently paying international rates for their throughput to Telkom instead of paying for the peering

I think that is costing them allot

Now if they can get direct peering then things will be allot different because the connection to each other will be faster because they won’t be paying per Kb/s connection through to the other networks
So you can have huge connections with great speed connecting all the networks together.

In the end everyone wins

Okay can some explain this to me... Mweb says peer with us , and it will be free , telkom says peer with us and you will pay.... Surely that should be a no brainer? If some company can save costs this makes so much sense.....

Go MWEB. Free peering can only benefit everyone. SAIX needs to join the party but they won't as if they peer with MWEB then they will lose all their peering income from other ISPs as well. The other ISPs will all just peer with MWeb to get to SAIX.

You can peer with Mweb for free at CINX and JINX. This only refers to traffic that originates or terminates on MWeb's network. It doesn't mean MWeb will take an ISP's traffic and deliver it on to some other network for free. They are an ISP, not a carrier.

one thing to remember for some ISP's it is not a option not to peer with Telkom

say they re sell telkom ADSL accounts and they don't peer then their own users will have issues getting mail and other stuff from them
I think the big boys are the only ones with the capability to choose to peer or notl

I think the reason Telkom hasn't come around on this is because they are still trying to find someone in their tech division who knows what "peering" is.

lol at Telkom, shame they are so out of their depth with all this "free stuff" floating around. They must be sensing that their days of telling SA how things will be is coming to an end as their monopoly starts to crumble around them. I am loving it :)

JEEZ, SORT OUT THIS PEERING THING ALREADY.

Clearly MWeb gave no thought on the consequences to their subscribers that their action caused. I have a server hosted in MTN's business DC, I'm an inherited MWeb subscriber (originally IS, then icon, then tiscali... argh, you get it) and I connect through Telkom ADSL. Latency is so poor that I can no longer manage my server (the control panel times out), my email had to be reconfigured (smtp.saix.net is no longer accepting or times out with outgoing mail from anyuser@icon.co.za), Dreamweaver times out when site updates need to be FTP'd to my clients' websites, and my SAAS online business ERM/CRM app is so slow that it's unusable!

In a a phrase, this is killing my business, and by extension, me!

Help!

Send your complaints to MTN Business and SAIX.

This thread is about MTN and MWeb finally peering. Is your connection still not peered as of about yesterday?

It sounds like they might do a full peering in the future so you should get sorted out.

Mweb almost certainly budgeted on the cost savings available through free peering before they launched - it is an absolute neccessity to make uncapped work. They also need to find ways to get people to use their uncapped connections on local content, hence DSTV on demand which is a carrot on free peering.

My worry for MWeb's apparent course of action lies in its unsuitability in terms of value for really entry level consumers and ultimately anybody using less than 10gigs. R219 is a really good prospect for uncapped but it is still in addition to line rentals a feature in restricting internet access. A cheaper lite option would go a long way in making the idea that the internet is a good thing a broader idea. More heavy shaping and throttling heavy users to 128kbs when demand is high.
Personally I think MWeb should offer a pensioners discount for all customers over 65.

I suspect that Telkom will find itself having to revisit its peering attitude to MWeb as soon as it wants to roll out video over IP which seemed to have been quitely mentioned with todays announcement. Basically the moment Telkom wants to bring out Telkom media it is stuffed if it can't sell its product to consumers on MWeb and other ISPs following suit. I suspect that without any fireworks Telkom will quitely freely peer with MWeb about a week before fireworks in which MWeb brings out a new range of consumer products which are heavily bundled and launched with massive fireworks (eg a landline with free calls, router, 5 gigs (internation) data a month, 50 gigs local data, 3g router and 500 megs a month, unlimited Facebook and other selected social networking sites, an 8ta contract and phone with free calls and call forwarding from the 8ta phone to the landline, a DO music and video store (with downloads not using your cap) and Telkom Media- for about R500 a month on a 24 month contract)

hehe....couldn't agree more!

Telkom will never be able to compete in an open market - that's why they got their asses kicked so badly in Nigeria. And lost an insane amount of money. Oh wait, that was just after they lost another insane amount of money with Telkom Media.

I bet they went to the Nigerian government and asked them for a monopoly, cos that's the only way they know how to operate - with absolutely zero competition. Old bad habits never die, like you still see the Telkom van parked under a tree and the technician sleeping inside. Pure bliss. :p

Potion are you using MWEB for your ADSL or Telkom?
Because if Telkom supplies you with your ADSL account then you should be able to use smtp.saix.net since it is a Telkom connection and nothing MWEB does should stop you from being able to do that

If however you get your ADSL account from MWEB then SMTP.saix.net should not work for you at all since you will be connecting to MWEB’s own network (this has been the case for a couple of months now)
So you should use smtp.mweb.co.za

So check what you are using

As for your connection with MTN from what is said here that is pretty much sorted out
So you should be able to use it

I find it hard to believe that anyone with even the slightest idea about how this industry works would not see this as a large step in the right direction.
