Thunderbird/Gmail configuration problems

Today I downloaded ThunderBird [getting tired of Outlook]. I've followed the guide on GMAIL on how to configure it with Thunderbird, but when I try and receive mail it says "pop.gmail.com timed out".

so i assume you've had your gmail account setup on outlook till now, and that it was working properly?
don't know why it wouldn't work on thunderbird if you entered all the settings correctly...
maybe delete the account off thunderbird and do it from scratch?

Nope, Outlook was just for receiving email from my other account.

I used GTALK to notify me of new emails but I decided that I wanted to try out ThunderBird.

EDIT: Outlook also doesn't work.

hmm, okay. have you enabled pop forwarding on your gmail account?

Change to mail.gmail.com

Well somehow it's worked

I changed it to mail.gmail.com and then back to pop.gmail.com. I also enabled SSL on pop.gmail.com as I'd only enabled SSL on smtp.gmail.com

aha... yeah the problem was almost certainly with the "ssl" option not being selected
was running out of ideas
