My DSL line went down 2 hours ago - after waiting 30 mins to speak to someone as they have a high volume of calls (that already should have told me something), I get through to 1st line telkom support. The guy tells me he's checked the line/dslam and there's no problem, it must be on my side. I'm running a router in bridge mode with a linux firewall and am just waiting for the guy to tell me we don't support that! Now I'm 99% sure its not my problem (I'm a network techie by profession) and its a line problem - before I can ask the guy any technical questions he says hold while he puts me through to desktop support. Ahhhh ffs!

Now I hold about 20 mins but listening to rubbish about how I can log the call on their web site  and get through finally get someone who knows that they're doing - he says he'll reset the line. He comes back in 2 mins - I run pppoe-start and voila! It connects.

Is it even worth logging these kind of problems - the last 4 calls I've logged have automatically fixed themselves by the next morning. Maybe I should save myself the long wait and just try again the next day.

What do you do - wait, or log the call?

I also had problems earlier, my line just 'stopped' working... but I switched my router off and restarted the PC then I tried again and it worked.

well my line just started working a couple of minutes ago, must have been a problem at the dslam

Hi,

I had to also log a complaint with Telkom - my line went down at around 20:00 today. Was surprised I "only" have to wait 30 minutes for a rep.

My line goes down at 6pm until about 10pm every single day, Telkom claims to have fixed it at least 4 times now.

It seems also that before 6pm when my line is stable it's being shaped on port 6667 to the point that I cannot connect to any IRC servers (and yeah, some servers only listen to 6667).

mine and four friends also went down tonight for about 2 hours. Anyone know what happened?

I've had exactly the same problem, could only get the line to work for short amounts of time in this period (6-10pm) and IRC battled to connect. Initially it was from about 11am-5pm, then it shifted to 6-10pm.

I kept logging this fault with telkom for about 6 months, must have had about 20 reference numbers and techies came out about 4 times, line was replaced 2 times (or so they claim). Also had our IS router replaced 3 times as Telkom insisted it wasn't their fault. Eventually as winter came the frequency of the problem became less and it seems it's gone away now. We'll see if it's a climate thing once summer returns.

I'm thinking it was probably a faulty DSLAM port or some messed up shaping, which they couldn't be bothered to fix.

It's pathetic that some people work for Telkom, and non are so clued up.
Sorry, my dsl was down for around 5 days / so, after calling every single day and been a pain in the butt, got through to someone that knows his story.

First, techie told me please switch your router on and off. [Already done that long ago]
Contacted around 15 people that week, non exactly known what the cause of the problem, they were all telling me it is sync on their side, and want to send a techie to my house to check, if everything is working.

Finally got through to someone who knew his story.
Restarted - The port on the exchange. And bang back on...

I've often found with adsl problems, if you just sit back and wait it out for a day(maybe read a book or something) it oftens fixes itself. But I suppose this doesn't help those ppl who depend on their internet connection to make a living and cant afford to be dwn for a day.
