It is not about checking thoroughly or every item at most stores after I asked one of them (food lovers market) . He said they just need to pick two random items in the packets and then see if those items are on the slip.

At a place like Food Lovers, it would make sense, but not at wholesalers.

Lately I see as the area and things are getting more dodgy my 2 local Spar's have employed people to stand around and watch shoppers, obviously checking for theft or vandalism or people doing something bad.

They awkwardly observe your body when you walk past, maybe checking for a box of kellogs stuffed in your jacket.

Our local Spar has slip technicians at the exit. I just ignore them. They could chance me down if they though their jobs would get any better.

Like SmuGS said. They build this magnificent new store here and it takes longer to get checked by these useless buggers than to get to a cashier.

There's no way they'd get away with this at a Walmart.
Don’t self checkout places use this similar strategy?

Most self checkout places I’ve used in the USA and UK have had a random check. Certainly not every single customer.

If the cashier is doing their job they’ll see that all items have been accounted for. The door checks are an unnecessary waste of time.

Till slip check technicians >>>>>> Plastic bag tape technicians.

What is the purpose of having someone put a small piece of sellotape on your plastic bag when you enter the shop? That won't deter anyone from stealing.

But the main reason it is annoying is often you have to rip open the bag, which means you can't use it again and have to buy a new one...so much for introducing a law to encourage recycling.

Yeah the places you shop at just don’t trust you

They're there to make sure the cashier isn't slipping you freebies. But yes they're mostly useless as the techs hardly ever check and you can see they're uncomfortable at the hostile reception they get from shoppers.

It's really idiotic. Reason why woolworths doesn't even bother. Specially this places that just put a tape over but you can easily slip more stuff in. Makes it easier to get away with stuff.... Lol

Do they actually make a difference?

You get to the door with your hands full of packets. This random oke looks at you as if boredom is gonna kill him soon, the only thing that keeps him alive is

"slip!".

So you awkwardly position all 10 packets on one arm, realised you can't even bench 1KG, same time feeling around for where the hell you put that slip, wallet dropping on floor, cellphone going the opposite direction. Found it!

He takes a peek into one of the packets as if his future is in there, draws a line over one of the random items as if he just completed a task on Trello, wipes his nose, hands you the anointed slip and returns to the position of "life is gonna end soon".

What is the purpose of these Till Slip Check Technicians, except for causing congestion at the exit?

Will this help that I do not leave my bottle of wine at the bottom of the trolley neither paying for it and not taking it

I try to avoid these checkers wherever possible, as it is just a waste of time. Walk right past them at Game and Builders, but have not had much success at Makro - the narrow exit with 2 checkers makes it difficult to just walk through.

Then you get the checks at e.g. Giant Hyper where the packers count the items as they place it in the bags, then mark the totals on the bags, with the slip checkers at the door only basically checking that the 20-item count on the slip matches the total written on the bags. It barely takes half a minute.

I have interacted with a few of these peeps, as they were just so obviously part of security - at least carry a cart or something for crying out loud.

Ultra Liquor look at every bottle and open sealed cartons

Shoprite has been the only place that open boxed items to check the contents when I buy stuff there.

I'm not bothered by them. They are hired to do a job. Mine is to comply.
