i had an axxess account once. they were very good. now...well...lol no comment!

I think it is important for adsl account holders to note the way adsl works in south africa. Some ISPs authenticate their own accounts, others let Telkom do it for them. I will leave it to AXXESS to explain this themselves should they feel the need to, but the point is, most of the time if something goes south on the bandwidth side (not always, but most of the time I daresay) the fingers should be pointed at Telkom.

I heard ISPs complain today that when it comes to the technical assistance of their customers their hands are sometimes tied because they don't have access to the line equipment (which can have an impact on service experienced) or proper controll of the bandwidth portion (which also has an impact on service experienced).

I think AXXESS will be more than forthcoming in explaining any anomilies in the service and whether or not the last gig is indeed shaped to death. For all we know it is Telkom mucking about with other ISPs services. Or perhaps not.

Personally I don't care what the reason is, if the customer is experiencing daft service, the best people to handle it (despite their known possible limitations) are the ISPs. I can just imagine the trouble a single consumer will have to go through to get the situation explained by Telkom. The ISPs have a formal and much quicker route of finding out. Surely paying Telkom millions to enable your services gives them some advantage when it comes to question time. :D

If we had proper competition and until then proper regulation, this kind of crap would be very limited. :)

BF2master, mind telling me what communication you've had with AXXESS?

Bandwidth Shaping

Just to clarify the above... We do NOT use the bandwidth shaping/capping attribute supplied by SAIX.
This has been removed about 2 weeks ago.
SAIX have supplied all of us with the ability to check a customers bandwidth usage on a hourly rate and to also disconnect the user when he has reached his cap.

thankks for reply axxess to clarify this issue. Please be more active in this forum because Axxess is getting bashed to pieces here.

What's happening at Axxess? They have been promising a new bandwidth stats monitoring tool, but it still has not appeared. Their web page states:

The stats server at Axxess is being upgraded. Please visit http://userstats.adsl.saix.net
and login with your Username & Password to view your ADSL stats.
The new stats server will be running within the next few days.

"Next few days" feels more like the next few weeks, or rather the next few months. Logging into the URL provided does not work either. How on earth are we supposed to check our stats? They do not really seem to be looking after us that well...

I'll be looking at changing to another ISP soon.

Axxess does throttle last portion

Just has axxess tell me that they do shape the last portion of your bandwidth. If have been stuck at 5-7kbs per second last couple of days. Changed accounts and hey presto i am back to 100 kbs. Both the Telkom test account and now my new Web Africa account flew. This is after Axxess told me I was not yet capped but about to be.

Dont lie, its disgusting and distastefull. Rather just tell us that you are throttling it.

ps Axxess are still using the measure of dividing the bits by 1000 instead of 1024. The SAIX stats analyser program says i still have a good 0.4gb left and Axxess are throttling me. I had enough and am migrating to Web Africa. Got a new account in less than 15 minutes.

Hey Axxess

I have got 3 accounts with you.
1Gb one works full speed till it's capped.
3Gb one works full speed till it's capped.
5Gb one works till about 95% then it's slow.

Think you have a programming error someplace.
You might want to have a look at it.

Ok. I just phone Axxess with the idea about there being a programming error.
They checked some of there coding on the radius server and guess what?
There was. All users that are on 5Gb accounts that usernames started with W,X,Y & Z still had the all Radius tags linked to them.
It's been fixed now and I am squeezing out the last of my 5Gb account again at full speed.
Thanks guys. I can now complete my movie download.

There seem to be quite a few errors, then. I've had severe trouble with their 10 GB account during the last 10%. Opened an additional 3GB since I got capped, and this one flies. No dropped connections, nothing.

Add in more irritations -- scheduled downtime without announcing it, no ability to check the current transfer limit -- and I'll be moving to another ISP as well. Too bad, they used to be excellent with their customer support.

Well if your new 3Gb account flies with no dropped connections then you might just want to stick with them.
Better the devil you know than the one you don't.
Remember, everyone(ISP) that is on top in these forums tend to slip once they get to much customers. It's very sad. But I hold thumbs for Axxess.
Plus I know that they are busy working on there new customer login pages etc.

What is a Gig?

Can someone explain what a gig actually is? How much are we supposed to get when we purchase a gig. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte says there are two definations. Nice.

The reason me asking is that the SAIX utillity that comes courtesy of antibody says I am still owed approc 400mb of data but the http://userstats.adsl.saix.net/ says I have used 4 932 964 188 and Axxess says once I am on 5 000 000 000 then I am capped. The antibody utillity says that I have used 4.594 Gigs.

So the question. Which one is right.

I think I've been sticking with them long enough, m0zy -- hopping from one ISP to the next is certainly something one should avoid, but the problems have been adding up since December. And customer support has been difficult to contact, to say the least.

Opened a trial (prepaid) account with WebAfrica in the meantime, will see how this turns out.

Now that is a good question. I am not sure myself. :o
