Time Travel

It is possible, but getting the technological advancements to achieve that is another matter. No sense in saying, "But if...". In time (no pun intended), we will have that technology, but I fear this may be in another 500 years or so.

ok. lets say one goes back into time and kills his father when he's 6 years old.

a) you would dissapear - single universe.
b) you would go into another "version" - the multiverse theory.

ok - lets look at A. it's impossible to time travel in a "single universe system".
if you went back, killed your father and preventing you from being born, you wouldn't have been traveling through time in the first place to do it - because he already DIED!

B - well, I don't think there exists a multi-verse. there is only here and now.

but ok - lets say you go back and change something - an alternate "way it goes".... you telling me *you* are creating a whole new universe every time you change something? yeah right.....

Ok look - if time travel was possible, then surely someone would travel back in time, and share all the knowledge that they have in the future (cure for aids, cancer, how to change matter into different matter, how to get cheap energy, etc) ?

surely this would speed up technology even faster and leap us even further ?

EDit: I see kompete has asked this already.

Maybe because they have the sense to realise that if they change the past they change their present. Imagine you went back 60 years and a certain european dictator got his paws on an H-bomb before the other team. How do you think that would have changed our present?

Nah, if time travelers are smart enough to know how to time travel they'd know not to mess with stuff. It'll end up changing their worlds in unpredictable and risky ways.

I won't say never. The question you asked us is akin to you asking a caveman if its possible to build video cameras. :D

If you're interested in parallel universe's read up on string and m theory. If I recall correctly that's one of the main objectives of that big ass(yet currently out of action) collider they built in Europe.
Apparently the math makes sense but there's no direct experimental evidence for parallel universe's yet.

Well to actually recreate the "big bang" thingy ;) O also to kind of test for the HB particle.

no....:erm: a black hole is simply a small piece of matter with the weight of several planets - you would simply be sucked in and die.

parallel universes do not exists, and neither do multi-verses or whatever.

Speculation.

If you were able to travel faster than the speed of light and go straight into a blackhole, you will come out in a parallel universe. Very interesting stuff indeed.

More Speculation.

My physics is a little hazy, but wouldn't time travel violate the 2nd law of thermodynamics - Entropy tends to increase - and hence be impossible?

Special cases ;) We have them for a lot of other things why not for time travel :p

Lets face it we know so little about the concept / rules of the universe that all we are doing is Speculating atm :)

you think so? you don't think they will come back to save us before we run out of gas/food?

what's the point of making a time machine and not use it?

- but you are right - if it was possible, even by getting on a bus you would change the whole world. yep, the whole world.

dude if you flew into a black hole your little space rocket would be buckled and compacted to something the size of a pea before you even get near it.....

Ah thanks for the correction Devill.

Well if we where to run out of gas or food anytime soon then there wouldn't be enough time left for us to figure out how to build a time machine.

We're hundreds of years away of generating enough power to send people back in time, never mind actually building a device that could handle such power in a controlled fashion.

what's the point of making a time machine and not use it?
Sight seeing? :D School trips! I'd go to check out the pyramids being built. Or see Rome in its prime. Or to go check out those ancient kung fu dudes and see if they where really as hardcore as all the legends made them out to be.

.

If so then somewhere in the future we have already invented this and therefore we should have time travellers wandering the earth today (in secret :D)...messing up theire future (butterfly effect)...so even if it was possible 10000 years from now, we would be so advanced that we would know not to F with time travelling

No, Einstein. I did the course. Are you really that arrogant to argue with a quantum physicist?
Keeper, all those are called paradoxes, which was also covered in the audio course.

Yes I am if he is claiming to know how time travel works.... For heavens sake we are not even 50% sure how quantum physics work, so how the hell does he claim to know for sure how black holes / time travel works?

People have THEORIES. I am almost 100% sure even the guy that gave the course would tell you that he is not claiming he understands it 100% ;)

And as soon as he starts talking about time travel he is known as a theoretical quantum physicist.

I'd like to go on a time-traveling course though....would love to hear all the theories :D

Did you miss the part where I said faster than the speed of light? All these theories are based on the known calculations and based on the assumption that if you could get past the event horizon and travel faster than the speed of light, you will enter a parallel universe.

Again, this is not his theory. This is general quantum physics. They discover these things by using calculations. Reading FTW.

Now that we have scratched the surface on that topic what u guys think about Nano Technology that seems to be moving way faster than a time machine lol

earth will be consumed by the grey goo effect once nano technology reaches a certain point.

@merc: how do you calculate that parallel universes even exist, nevermind finding/going through one. this is not battlestar galactica and there is no multiverse! it's a theory! no proof = NADA.

I'm no scientist, but you should ask them how they perform these calculations.

There are provisions against this because nanotechnologists are so paranoid about it (a very real danger). One of the provisions is tying (designing) the nanites to a non-naturally occurring feedstuff (so that they starve if they get out of control). This is only for legal nano stuff, it doesn’t address terrorist actions. For them, another provision has been postulated - **blue goo** (really). This is like a nano police force, its only function is to attack grey goo.

Still, a nasty scenario. Would make nuclear weapons look like children’s toys.

Yes its like calling Hawkings theories fact.

Could you please give me a link to the paper this guy wrote and the the academic credentials. Could I also see the peer review(s) on this paper.
Ps If you say its general quantum physics could you then please quote the text book/journal/paper it was published in?

Merc trust me on this Time travel recipes or alternate universes are THEORY not fact atm.

They are theories, yeah. The only way it will be fact is when it actually happens.

My question though is it possible too travel faster than light? Could it be the fastest speed anything could travel?

It must be a theory though, what travels faster than light?
