Time Travel

And then finally, why travel back in time if you can go forward?

That would assume that the future is mapped out and predetermined, because you'd need a reference point to go to in the future. Not a problem when traveling into the past, because past events determine the reference point.

So in theory it may not actually be possible to go back once you have traveled to the past, my reasoning for this is as follows:

Lets say 1 July 2090 at 14:00 you decide you want to go visit your grandfather somewhere in 2009, you leave at that point in time spend an hour looking for the poor guy and don't find him decide to go back.

Now in my mind one of two things would happen when you travel:
Firstly, you are removed from the present time, as in you cease to exist at 1 July 2090 at 14:00 and find yourself back in 2009. If the future was mapped out you would be able to return on 1 July 2090 at 15:00 with no ill affects, just having missed an hour in your actual time space (almost like work).

If the future was not mapped out you would not be able to return to any point other than 1 July 2090 at 14:00 and at that stage you would be 1 hour older than everyone else was when you left. This assumes that time stood still for them though. If time did not stand still for them I still don't think you would be able to return to another point as you were not actually present at that time for it to pass.

Secondly, you could be placed into stasis where you continue to exist in your own time and a duplicate is created in the past. Once you are done doing what you went to the past for you then just have to convince your duplicate to cease existing and you continue on your merry way in the present.

Another question would be, if you did go back to the past and the world was destroyed in the present while you were away, wouldn't that be a nice surprise when you return?

If you traveled back in time and killed your past self, the universe would implode and cease to exist. Now that's a mind ****.

forward-in time travel is possible though.

...or, at least it would seem that way to the person stepping into the chamber

cryogenics.

it's definitly *possible* as it still only relies on a single universe - not a multi-verse or parallel dimensions and whatnot.

I think if you travelled back in time your mind and body would also be reversing, tracing its own steps backwards. You would be none the wiser when you reach ten years ago because you will be yourself and the only version of yourself doodling in math class and thinking about time travel.
You might have just travelled back in time 50 years and not know it :P

I can barely tolerate this cold weather, fark that idea. :D

Rather clone me and transfer my memories into the new body.

Huh? How am I single-handedly responsible for the existence of the universe?

I wasn't being serious, just exaggerating the possible paradoxes involved with time travel.

Edit: should have put a smiley somewhere in the post I suppose.

Not just with cryogenics - travelling closer to the speed of light results in time-travel of sorts, as space-time bends - from a bystander's perspective, it could be years - from the traveller's perspective it could be minutes.

But travelling back in time is an interesting one. Personally, I don't believe it is possible - so once you've gone forward, there aint no going back imo. The string theory is pretty implausible (wormholes and such) and completely uncontrollable if they even do exist, regardless of the immense amount of energy required to break the space-time fabric. The cosmic string theory is so bizarrely out of our scientific reach that imo it's also implausible. Heck, we can't even control our own earth energy sources, let alone cosmic string energy. And then I watched a programme about some inebriate who wants to build a machine to record all subatomic configurations to use to travel backwards in time. Er, yeah right. Firstly, that machine is just preposterous. Secondly, that would have to influence everyone at the same time, so when he switches the rewind button, we all rewind out steps together, like playing a vcr. Er, nope - I just don't believe that travelling back in time is possible, within our current framework of scientific understanding.

I'd certainly give time travelling forward a shot though - if they could develop technology to allow my body to handle the trip...

I actually like this idea :) It's like telling the universe to divide itself by 0! Go an kill something that actually doesn't exist!

Its like a MUD I use to play on yonks ago, when it was first developed there was a bug in the server where if you simply typed "put bag in bag" everything would start slowing down to a crawl for everyone on the server and then *crash* Once the server had then rebooted itself the first question would always be "Who tried to fold a bag into itself?"

Haha I did that with html once.

I can code a page that would slow down your PC to a crawl!! and it downloads so fast as it's only like 5 kb for the entire page!

Simply create a page with 4 frames.
Now, make it so that each frame loads "Page.htm".
save the file as "Page.html".

it basically opens a page, divided by 4 frames. each of those are divided by 4 frames as well, and so on.....

hav fun!

Some pseudo-scientists call it dimension travel, to circumvent this conundrum...

And others actually have valid theorms and yes dimensions are not always as we think about them... atm there are a few theories that suppose us to live in 11 or even more dimensions ;)

Time is not liniar nor circular.

Huh? How am I single-handedly responsible for the existence of the universe?

Lol, sometimes I know you might think so and mommy tell you that but uhm ...no :p:D

There are infinite dimensions maaaaaaaaaaaaan. In one of them, I'm a member of the Fantastic Four (the rocky one) and married to Shakira. Fact.

This is a mildly amusing discussion...
B - well, I don't think there exists a multi-verse. there is only here and now.

I am going to have to side with Keeper here...

What the Bleep, The Secret...
No better than Oprah...

I don't believe anyone here would have heard of Wolf or Dispenza and the rest, if it weren't for J.Z. Knight and "What the Bleep"

And I ask myself why don't all the xx,000 year old Aliens know each other? Or the Angels... And unless I am mistaken The Secret is along the line of the teaching of "Abraham Hicks"... Sorry, different thread...

Back to time travel... Uhm, I'm still with Keeper. No. A good discussion to keep people busy while the monolithic companies screw them for the privilege of posting here... :o

More seriously. Korzybski describes Man as a Time-binding entity... What ever that may be. How could that affect the question/answer?

Further, how many of the things mentioned here a models rather than theories... And aren't theories and/or models only adopted for short periods of time. Used to set aside current beliefs so that we can test something that is outside of our current thinking?

People your grasp on objectivity looks really shaky at the moment...

I would prefer if we didn't figure out time travel... You only need to look at the news to see that we can't look after ourselves properly.

LOL. 11 means buggerall if you think about it. And you're also now referring to string theory which I already addressed in my post. You'd require infinite dimensions to travel back in time. This is the conundrum I proposed. This is why I already stated that many pseudo-scientists use the term 'dimension travel'. Keep up, Baldrick...

Lol, sometimes I know you might think so and mommy tell you that but uhm ...no :p:D

Hardie har.

It's not funny as a layman's joke. It's not funny from a scientific perspective either. It's a fail on all counts...

Look DJ..., defending yourself is one thing, haranguing devill another - but to not have a snappy retort for Samsung's... :erm: ... post is completely out of character :p

Lol, doesn't sound like you know what string theory is. (pssst 11 dimens. = M-theory a unification of the main string theories). Lol, also 99% of those pseudo-scientists are infinitely more qualified and knowledgeable on the subject than you, so maybe stick to cooking ;)

So doc DJ have your paper ready on the subject of how you proved there are no extra dimensions?

Ps here is a nice piece about how we get from standard model >> String theory >> Superstring >> M-theory

Mmm sure at the very least one person found it funny (me) thus your highness it is funny.

You having weight issues? Rather have Megan Fox (and be silver surfer :p).

Would it be possible in the near future to go back in time? And what about parallel universe's do they really exist?

Time doesn't exist. The sun goes up and down and we call this a day. Our cell replication causes our bodies to eventually die off and we call this getting old. All this has been split into a years, months, days etc based solely on the setting and rising of the sun. Put somebody in a dark room and all sense of time goes out the door. Hours feel like days and visa versa, thats cause our brain has been programmed for years to using external factors to quantify something that does not really exist.
