Tinnitus

Any other sufferers here? Had it now real bad for about 3yrs! Any home remedies you know of?
I've had it mainly in my left ear for a few more years than you, and there's nothing I've found out there to cure it.
You can get special hearing aids that counter it somewhat.

Mine is a result of heavy rock at high volume and not wearing my ear protection at work.

Ja, right ear, just over two years and counting...some days it's worse than others. Bells, ringing, clanging, buzzing, whirring, lawnmower engines, steam whistles, roaring, fizzing, clicking...I've got a demon running amok in a fully equipped soundstage in my head and it's not a whole bundle of fun.:(

Yea, ENT's are hopeless.

Had it mainly in my right ear for almost 7 years now. Just started suddenly. (I was used to having a ringing sound after a night out at the club but it usually went away)

Mine is due to stress apparently. You get used to it but sometimes its annoying, especially if you have to ask people to repeat what they said cause you didn't hear them.

Mine is flipping brilliant - he managed to get my out-of-check allergies under control which no one else - including a slew of US/UK doctors - had been able to do.

Find a better ENT specialist.

Why dont you list his name for people in the area?

ENT's might be brilliant with allergies and whatever, but not with Tinnitus. The whole lot of SA ENT's are clueless in this regard.

i didn't know what that noise was called, i have a very very light case, where i might get a ringing only once a week maybe, haven't had it for a while now i think of it...

In SA ENT specialists and dermatologists often assume the role of allergists.

Tinnitus (buzzing noise heard by the person) is a symptom and not a diagnosis (cause). The chief role of the ENT or neuroscientist in acessing tinnitus is to find the cause, by using various imaging modalities eg MRI.

There are some important causes to exclude eg acoustic neuroma or meningioma when considering tinnitus - those two are examples of tumours
(which may be cancerous)
one of the auditory (hearing) nerve the other of the layer of membranes wrapping the brain. Problems can also be inside the ear - cochlea (tumours, inflammation, infection, chemical imbalances often brought on by medications and unknown causes) or
in the brain connections to the auditory nerve (auditory nerve nuclei and those connections further up to the auditory cortex). Finally there is also a vascular
tinnitus - this is usually pulsatile and may imply an aneurism (balloon like widening) of an artery nearby or a connection between an artery and a vein (anastomosis) where blood is flows turbulently and generates a pulsatile like noise - this makes the tinnitues not constant but in pulses. Sometimes tinnitus is also caused by simple things such as heavy wax build up in the ear canal.

If no specific cause can be found, and dangerous causes have been excluded, then symptomatic control is what is offered.

I have it in both ears, a very intense hissing sound. Mine is caused by heavy calibre cannon testing over many years.

Here a URL from a group that claims something can be done, but read yourself.

My doctor claims that not much can be done about tinnitus and if I get a solution to the problem I should let him know too.

i had a slight case of tinnitus after getting a concussion... lasted about 2 weeks though apparently it can be permanent if the brain damage was serious enough...

In August my ears became blocked. The doc told me it's fluid in the middle ear (something I haven't had since I was 2 or 3 years old). Since August it has come and gone but right now my left ear is a bit blocked and lately I've been experiencing tinnitus on that side. It's very frustrating and out of desperation I'm hoping the change of season/weather in Jhb will improve the situation.
