Tips to Boost your eBucks

Having had a closer look at the reward rules, I would end up being level 3 on platinum. Not sure it is worth it for me.
But are you saying even with some changes in behaviour you won't be able to attain level 4 or 5? Sure, there are gonna be some hoops to jump through. One just has to do the math and see if it's worthwhile. Being level 5 is where the effort pays off.

So I received a quotation to downgrade my Private Clients Credit Card to a Platinum Card. My interest rate goes up by 3 percentage points. I don't mind too much as it's just a "just in case" account, but I'll see if they can lower it if I request a lower limit.

The interest rate doesn't bother me either. I can count one one hand in the last 15 years that I had to pay interest due to not settling my credit card in full. And even then it was because I forgot to pay in time, before the days of setting up a debit order to settle the full amount...

This is what I have calculated I will likely get in the way of reward points:
Register for incontact and agree to receive marketing: 500 points
Choose to receive all of your statements in email only: 500 points
Have an active FNB cheque or credit card for 3 years or more: 1000 points
Not actually sure about this one because I held a cheque and credit card for a few years before downgrading to a smart account, so I am not sure I qualify for it
No branch transactions in the last 6 months - 1500
However, this could take me up to 6 months to actually get.
6 monthly debit orders - 1000
FNB Homeloan with an outstanding balance of 250 000 or more - 3000
Smart device contract - 1500
Swipe your credit card for between R5000 and R9999 - 1500
But, if I buy food at Woolies or Pick n Pay using my discovery card, I might spend less on my FNB card and thus get only 1000 points
Use between 10% and 90% of your credit limit in a calendar month - 3000 points. Fairly easy to achieve if I set the limit correctly.
Only swipe your card or use Cash@Till™ (no ATM or FNB Branch withdrawals). - 1500 points

Total: 16000 points. And as I said, that is with me spending over R5000 on my credit card, which might not happen.

@Ancalagon, well if you can do 2 out of these 3 then you hit level 5:
*15k minimum balance in Platinum Cheque Account or linked Savings Pocket 1000 points
*FNB Investment with minimum balance of 10k 1500 points
*Online shopping using Credit Card 1500 points

Edit: Regarding the DiscoveryCard, I have ditched going out of my way to spend at WW or PnP in favour of Checkers/Shoprite. I'd rather get 15% (**or more) off everything at Checkers than 25% off only healthy foods.

** eBucks value becomes greatly increased by using them to get gift cards from the eBucks store.

I could do that I suppose. At least the FNB investment one is not too difficult to achieve.

The problem is that I hate checkers. I don't like the food, obviously things like handy andy etc are the same no matter where you go.

With my Discovery card, anything I spend gives me 0.85% back in value in terms of Discovery miles, in addition to any other benefits. You get one Discovery mile per R12 spent, and 10 discovery miles are worth R1. Also, using my discovery card and smart shopper together gives me bonus smart shopper points. At the moment, being on Silver status, I get 6x the smart shopper points as a bonus. This means that for every R1 that I spend, I get 7 smart shopper points total. So, R100 spent gives me R7 in value.

So, for non healthy food, spending at pick n pay gives me R7.85 back for every R100. For healthy food, I get R25 + R7.85 = R32.85 back for every R100 spent.

Looking at that, Discovery is only worth it for the food. The other stuff is not worth bothering about. The only exception is if you spend at their partner stores, like Look n Listen or Stutterfords, because you get a nice cash refund there.

OK yeah, because I don't want to pay to join Discovery Miles it really makes PnP pointless for me. So shopping for us is now mainly Checkers and some things at WW. WW is more for the Vitality points which I need to maintain Diamond status.

Maintaining diamond status on Vitality is the easiest thing in the world.

Just have every member of the family do the 5 things required once a year:
1. Vitality wellness checks + online questionairs
2. Declare non-smoker
3. HIV check
4. Fitness check
5. Dietician

And if you smart, you can do them all in one go, like I do at VA Durbanville.

Sadly, I only use Discovery for the discount on flights. While I could higher discount with eBucks, the ebucks route for flights mean you actually need to have the ebucks at the time you buy the tickets, which is not always the case for me.

I think you need only 5000 per ticket

You need to pay the full price in eBucks to get the discount don't you?

You no longer need to pay the full price of your kulula.com flight in eBucks. You must simply pay a minimum of eB5 000 for each ticket. You can now get eBucks Discounts on all Emirates destinations.eBucks Discounts now apply to both return and one-way flights. You now receive eBucks Discounts on adult, child and infant tickets that are greater than R500.

I'm only at Silver now, but I'll reach gold by the end of the year. I might discontinue the Discovery miles benefit if it starts becoming pointless. Will have to calculate it.

The thing is, 25% is quite a whack of a discount on healthy food, but the thing is, even though I eat fairly healthy, I usually get around R100 in cash back. Which would mean I am spending R400 per month on healthy food.

So 15% of R6k is a lot more than 25% of R400.

EDIT: The nice thing about Discovery is that, compared to FNB, you actually don't need to invest any money to get the benefits. Whereas, with FNB, your reward level is based on how much money you spend with the bank every month. Its therefore easier to hit a higher reward level with Discovery than it is with FNB.

Please somebody explain me how the discount works if I qualify for 40% discount and I want to purchase something can I buy it at the 40% discount without losing the ebucks
I'm a bit confused

The 40 percent discount is when you pay with ebucks.

The 40 percent discount is when you pay with ebucks.

So does that mean I will lose all my ebucks if buy at item which is R20k and I got 100k and than I will be dropped to level 1

The earn level is not related to how many ebucks you have. Earn level is calculated by how you use your fnb financial products and dictates how quickly got accumulate ebucks.

If you buy the 20k item with ebucks at 40 percent discount it will cost you 120000 ebucks (12k Rand) .your earn level won't be directly affected.

The 40% discount is typically on stuff that you buy with your eBucks. So for a R1000 makro virtual voucher you can pay it with cash which will cost you R1002.50 (R2.50 sms delivery fee) or it will cost you 6025 eBucks (eqiv. R602.50) , so you have to use the eBucks to get that 40% discount

Thankyou for that. I wasn't aware you don't need to pay the full price anymore on tickets! 5000 ebucks makes it very doable most of the time have at least that ebucks around.
