Tips to Boost your eBucks

EBucks are earned only on the actual amount paid.

You get 2% from Kalahari by entering your ID. This is separate and added to the x% you can get from using your card to pay directly

Cool. That makes sense. Thanks for clarifying!

Never buy vouchers for Checkers. Basically, the 15% return on ebucks works out to 25% when you calculate the voucher value.

R100 spend, 15 ebucks gained. 15 ebucks can be used to buy R25 worth of vouchers. So works out to 25% exactly. You can use this to simplify price comparisons

Is not 150 ebucks ? i.e. R15 worth of ebucks?

I forget, is it in fact possible to get 55 days interest free on all transactions? It isn't actually, hey? That's why they say "up to" 55 days interest free.

Not on all transactions. If you withdraw or do an online transfer with your credit card, interest will begin immediately on those line items.

There is one exception to this rule that I was made aware of recently. That is if you buy airplane tickets, you only need to pay a certain minimum amount with ebucks, the rest you can pay with money to still get the 40% discount on the whole ticket.

From what I understand you only get 40% off on the non-tax portion of the plane ticket.

I'm currently at 15000 points, so reward level 3. And I realized I only got this because I bought something online in the last month, which gives you 1500 points. Once I have my credit card for long enough, I'll get another 1500 points for not having gone into arrears for 6 months.

I've decided that I am going to invest R10000 into an FNB investment account. This will give me another 2500 points, which could push me into level 5 if I combine it with maybe one other thing (possibly a smart device?). There is an opportunity cost in the form that the interest I will get on my R10k is pretty bad, and I could use that money to payback my car instead. But I think double the eBucks (going from level 4 to level 5) from checkers and fuel will be worth it.

Yes.
Yeah I think that is the same for ebucks and for discovery.
Yes.

Which goes back to a point that someone else touched on. By looking around for deals available to the general public, one can match (if not beat) the 40% or 35% "discounts" offered by eBucks or Discovery.

They always catch you with the airport taxes and whatnot.

Plus, of course, the cost of the SmartDevice :)

I had a look at that Discovery discount for a return flight to Europe.

Discovery (Kulula, I think through Emirates) quoted me a price of R10500 return, minus 30% discount, so R8500.

The Emirates website quoted me R8500 flat.

So yeah, I think these discounts are not what you think they are.

If I decide to get one. Thing is, I can't think of a smart device that I actually need at the moment. A laptop would be nice, but if I buy a laptop, I would rather go to Incredible Connection where they have a much bigger selection and I will get a 15% discovery discount.

So I don't want to get a smart device that I actually don't need.

Just check the pricing... Incredible for an Iphone is way way more expensive...
My dad did do that... but he writes off the tax and the vat along with the 20% off on discovery...

I've gone the route of getting my iphone as a smartdevice from FNB. But I am RL4 now, moving to RL5 next and am a PW card holder... so im expecting to get 4690 back in ebucks...

What I'm trying to say is - like what you saw with the plane tickets... do your research... there are always a couple of options...

Does anyone have a summary of what needs to be done to get to rewards level 5? (platinum)

I have read through most of the thread and it looks like you need both an investment and an international investment. What is the best one to just dump in the R10 000 in?

So, I haven't heard back from FNB regarding this, but I think I found the answer on my own. This relates to the investment account only, the one that gives you 2500 points. What you need to do is login to online banking, then go to your accounts page. Midway down the page, just above or below smart devices, is investment accounts. If you click on Add, you get a list of investment accounts that you can add. Some of them require monthly topups, some require lumpsum.

However, be careful. A lot of them will give you effective annual interest rates of lower than 5.3%, which is the current inflation rate (some say it is closer to 5.7%). To find out what interest rate you can get, I found that you need to search online and you can find a list of them. It depends on the time horizon for the investment product and sometimes how much you invest. My advice - take a 12-24 month fixed deposit for R10k or more. The returns are not fantastic and you will probably get better returns on the stock market, but it is an easy 2500 points, which, if used correctly, can add up to quite a lot of eBucks.

I think you can get 2000 points by just leaving over R15000 in your cheque account, but that sounds like a worse idea than investing as described above.

As for international/forex investments - no idea.

Below is my points for level 5:

Do all your payments and transfers during the month via our electronic channels instead of an FNB Branch (1500)
Spend R2000 or more on your FNB Platinum Credit Card in a calendar month (2000 out of possible 2500)
Have monthly debit orders going off on your FNB Platinum Cheque account (1000)
Have banked with FNB for 18 months or more (1000)
Have an Auto Payment (debit order) set up on your FNB Platinum Credit Card. (500)
Choose to receive all your Account statements via email only (500)
Have an active Tablet/Smartphone contract (1500)
Have an investment account which meets the average monthly balance of R10 000 or more (2500)
Register for inContact , allow us to communicate with you and keep your contact information up to date (500)
Use between 10% and 90% of your credit limit during the calendar month. (3000)
Use your FNB Platinum Credit Card to pay for your online shopping. (1500)
Does the value of your FNB Platinum Card swipes and Cash@Till withdrawals exceed the value of your ATM and FNB Branch Withdrawals? (1500)
Have not exceeded your limit or gone into arrears on your Credit Card for six months and more (1500)

Total: 18500

I do all my shopping on my credit card and pay it off once a month.

I would put the R10 000 in an investment account for the 2500 points.

Below are other point you could earn:

Have an Overdraft Facility of R5 000 or more and use between 10% and 100% of the facility (2000)
Have a Global Account with a balance greater than 1 000 (for EUR, GBD) or 1 500 (USD) or 1 600 (AUD) or 90 000 (INR) or 9 000 (CYN) (3000)
Have a drafted and signed Will in custody with us (1000)
Have a Temporary loan which you have settled in the month (within the specified period) (2000)
Have an active Home Loan with us that is in good standing and with a min outstanding balance of R250 000 (3000)
Have a Personal loan of R5 000 or more (1500)
Maintain a minimum monthly balance in your FNB Platinum Cheque Account or linked Savings Pocket of R15 000 or more (2000)
Have an FNB Share Investor or Share Builder account with a minimum cumulative trade value of at least R15 000 over the previous six months. (1000)
Swipe on international purchases using your Platinum Cheque or Credit Card (excl. cash transactions) (1500)
Have a Revolving Loan that you used during the month (2000)

Anyone used the global account?

Besides a tax clearance number, you need SARS authorisation number (or something like that)?

Maybe not see post #996

I had a chat with the FNV Forex - 0860 1 FOREX (36739)

You need to choose "512-07 Foreign investments - Other" and then the tax clearance certificate number field is not required to be filled.

I made a USD inter-account transfer yesterday, and it was processed and reflecting on my account today.

Having a look at the devices, you can get one for as cheap as R90 per month.

How about this - get a Nokia Lumia 630 for R90 per month, then sell it for R2000. You get the boost in eBucks, which will be more than R90 per month, even if you don't sell it.

I need to think of the most optimal smart device for me to get. I don't have a tablet - perhaps one will be useful for travelling? They have some cheapie Android tablets.

An Xbox One or PS4 would be nice, but I can't justify it because I know I won't use it. Already have a TV and don't want a new one until 4K comes down in price.
