I have a hd7950 gpu. I have a budget of about 4k to get an upgrade. I've seen some gtx 970s and r9290 cards going for about that price or less. I game on 1920x1080 but some games can't be maxed with the fine tune settings like msaa etc
Was wondering if I should upgrade now or wait for the amd 3xx series to see what happens? Would like a card that Will last me about 3 years at least with no problems.

Cpu: amd 8350 @4.0
Ram: 8gb 1600
Power supply: corsair tw750
Motherboard: Asus sabretooth 990fx r2.0

What u guys recommend?

Are you gonna sell your existing graphics card?

Also nothing stopping you from getting a GTX970 or R9 290 and selling them again later. For instance I see a R9 290 going for R3650 atm which would probably be worth roughly the same 6 months from now.

Depends on how much you like the concept of waiting, because the HD 7950 still plays everything well.

I don't see the AMD 3xxx being game changing cards. If they bring out a card @ R3000 with 50% more performance than the GTX 960, then everything changes.

The new series is so close to release you might as well wait. Even if you get an older gen card then, they'd have fallen in price.

I'd say go with a 970 (Nvidia fanboy). I think it'll last you a couple of years easy. And if after a few years you think the performance isn't enough, then SLI :D Your mobo and PSU Will easily handle the SLI so there's no problems with having to upgrade those as well down the line.

What games will you be playing? On most games turning Anti-Aliasing down or even off doesn't make THAT much of a difference visually, but does make a difference to your FPS. I almost never play with AA on, and when I do it's on something like x2 or x4, never max.

What he said. I'm going to wait a bit till the new cards are released and prices stabilize.

I don't like the look of games with heavy antialiasing. I'm happy with fxaa or smaa. I honestly don't know why more games don't have smaa as it looks good & does not cripple your fps.

For those interested you can use use Reshade+Sweetfx to inject smaa into games & it also adds many other changes to the way a game looks. I've got smaa injection on gta 5 wit K-putt'e Config 1.1 and it looks much better than the stock graphics.

Give it a try (you can toggle it on/off ingame with the scrolllock key) or go check some of the comparison videos on youtube, just search for 'gta 5 k-putt'

Hold on!!!! Skylake is just around the corner. Dunno if it will be a huge upgrade like from Nehalem to Sandy Bridge. Wait and see. Check out tech news for more info on this brand new Intel architecture.

Maybe you should read the thread. Or at least just the first post.

Get a decent cooler on the fx8350 OC to 4.6ghz.

Come trade-in your hd7950(with cash) for a brand new gtx 970 :P

The fx cpu's will work great with dx12 ,so no need upgrade just yet.

Thanks guys, think I'm gonna wait and see what the new gpus will be like.the only problem is my money skills are crap and if I wait I'll probably blow it on a ps4 or something. But that's not my plan. @gtxgaiming, you guys are in cape town I'm in jhb.
Also I will be giving my brother the 7950 and selling his 6950

agree AA kills fps but in some games its needed like gta 5,with out it it looks horrable
dont have the best screen for gaming (samsung 40h5000) but with out MSAA on x2+ the lines on the game looks horrable
and TXAA makes it look so blurry no detail on the cars etc

i am so tempted to sli my 970 so i can even crank the setting up more

atm i got it all maxed out in main settings FXAA is on with 2xMSaa
advanced i turned off

i get anything from 65-100 in town
and around 40-50 on the out side

hopefully if i sli i can bump up the setting more and get 50-60fps out side
with everything maxed fps not so good :( if i remember right about 30 or so

but anyways the 970 is a great card even tho the 3.5gb crap
