My son has 2Gb 7850 Asus Gpu in his PC..

Mobo that he has is AsRock Z77 Fatal1ty Performance board.
Running 2 x 4gb DDR3 1600mhz G.SKill RipJaws
CPU is 3470 i5 Ivy Bridge

Now should I get another one and run X-Fire or ditch the 7850 and get him something more powerful?

I would say get something more powerful, but I'm not sure where you'd get it from.

I would look at something like the following:

Pick up an RX460, RX560, 1050 or 1050Ti, as long as you don't pay exorbitant prices for them.

Cards like the 560 or 1050Ti could approach being twice as fast as the 7850, but will use a lot less power and produce a lot less heat.

EDIT: Or wait 3 months and then buy an RX580 or RX570. I reckon in 3 months, demand will come down a bit and so will prices.

x-fire & sli does not scale well in all games and in those it does work some experience micro-stutter.

Go for a single more powerful gpu, something like a gtx 1060 will be more than twice as powerful (compared to the 7850).
