Today I learned something new, dunno if it's common knowledge but I certainly didn't know this before.

Do you know which side of your car the gas tank is on? Of course you do, how else do you know which side of the pump to drive up to? But what if it's a rental, or your wife's car, or even a car you don't drive very often? Do you strain your neck to check the mirrors when you need to fill up?

Well, you'd be surprised to know that the majority of new cars (the last couple of decades actually) explicitly tell us which side the gas tank is on. Just look at the dashboard fuel gauge and you'll see a picture of a gas pump with an arrow. Whichever way the arrow points is the side of the filler cap!

Lightbulb moment!

Of course, not all cars have this indicator arrow, but for those, simply look at what side of the pump the hose is attached to ..

Mine has this. Most new cars do, too, as you mentioned.

Only found this out recently as well. :wtf:

Welcome to the future.

My car however does not have this indicator (A4)

Sweet, I drive my car everyday and I still get confused. Thanks for that tip !!

Yep, the instrument cluster usually indicates on what side is what, I know two early 1990’s model cars which also show such indication by the simple layout on the instrument cluster.

The arrow is legit, the handle on the fuel pump isn't though, it's pretty random on cars, I've driven a few where it's on the other side. The best tip I can give is, European cars: Are generally on the drivers side, American/Asian cars are on the passengers side.

I found years ago that the petrol is always on the opposite of the indicator lever on the steering.

Noticed that too, not sure why. One of the reasons why most German cars have the tank on the right, while most Japanese cars have the tank on the left.

my car is so **** that it doesn't even include this :p

Citroen C3 :p

Some cars don’t have the arrow but you can still determine which side the filler cap by looking at which side the picture of the pump is facing - whichever side has the fuel pipe nozzle thingy is the side your filler cap is on 9 times out of 10.

Toyota corolla (1998) it is on the opposite side of the nozzle pump
