A blood-splattered walking ring is all that was left after two little brothers were crushed by a train on Thursday.

Two year-old Salie Smith and his three-year-old brother Faiek didn’t stand a chance when the train slammed into them close to Nyanga Junction, near Cape Town, at about 5pm.

Their bodies lay like rag dolls along the tracks as a crowd of people gathered around, some murmuring: “Where was the mother?”

Cops say the toddlers’ mom Shafeeqah Smith, 21, was searching for them in Tambo Square Village, Manenberg, while they lay crushed near the tracks.

Also at the scene lay their crushed walking ring, splattered with blood.

On the scene, Shafeeqah, surrounded by relatives, was urged by Metrorail and police not to talk to the media.

But as she stood just metres from the bodies, the stunned mom said: “Hulle is al twee my kinders, hulle is broers [They are both my children. They are brothers].”

She then mumbled that they were her only kids.

The young mother says she was not present when the incident occurred and could not comment on how the two kids ended up unsupervised on a railway track.

When asked if they were playing, she shook her head.

An aunt, who stood hugging the young mother, said they believe the children were playing near the tracks.

The children live just a stone’s throw from where they died.

Community leader Desiree Paris says: “I was called and told there were two bodies there but I was shocked when I saw it was two children.

Are you that F#CKING DUMB???? The mother should not have left her kids alone, wtf are you going on about fences?? If that stupid excuse for a mother actually looked after her kids properly...this would never have happened...fence or no fence. Catch a clue dumbass!

I officially nominate Desiree Paris for dumb f#cknut of the year, the mother a close second...

People want rights - not responsibilities.

This mother should have looked after her children - it's not the government responsibility to raise her children

Sorry to hear about the children though...

yes people like you should maybe not have kids.

RIP:(

Very tragic, oh my word.

In the Cape flats and poorer suburbs, children play in the streets, always have.

Spoornet should ensure safety along it's lines, especially in the poorer areas where
street living & socialising is part of peoples cultures.

Yes, the mom was negligent, and she will pay for this emotionally for the rest of her life.
So sad.

What a tragic story and you all okes can do is moan about the parents.

F when i was a kid my parents never watched me every minute of the day. Shame what an absolutely horrific way to start their weekend. We played cricket in the road, walked down to the park. My parents allowed us to roam unattended most of the time.

Not when you were 2/3 years old though. Kids who are say something like 6, at the very very least, can do some things unsupervised.

Kids that age should be supervised all day, everyday. This is why.

Simple, don't vote for the liars next time. Too bad it's too late for your babies.

Did you blame government when you got hurt in the street. I also played in the street - but as a kid you still remain the parents responsibility.
Besides these children were still practically babies - with a walking ring - how do parents leave them unattended

Hell, I played in the streets from the morning to the evening, so did all my friends. We were obviously a bit older though and children of that age should be under constant supervision.

sad, very sad.

i still wonder what the mother was doing? perhaps servicing a client & locked them out the house so they don't see?

People should look after their kids, not pass the resposibility over to others when something goes wrong. You can not blame Spoornet for this. I feel sorry for the poor Train drver that will feel that he killed two kids for the rest of his life.

Kids on railway tracks?

Uh, If I was 3 and I hear via the Doppler effect a big train coming, I run..

I rate the mother killed them.

This reminds me of a case in America where a lady had her child (toddler) in the middle-backseat of her car.

She was going fast (probably speeding?) had to break and the child flew out the window, hit the toad and was torn asunder.

She then proceeded to blame the local government because it was not LAW that all children should be fastened down with a seatbelt...

I mean WTF, it does not have to be law, its common sense!

How the heck can a kid in a walking ring get on the track??

I think the mother killed the kids on purpose. Financial difficulties perhaps?

I won't go that far - reckless yes - but don't think it's on purpose.

This morning when I was driving to work, I heard this story on the news and then I looked across at the railway line - there were fences in place - but obviously someone wants a shortcut so they just make a hole in the fence or pull the fence poles out of the ground. Its tragic that these kids died but I wouldnt point fingers at Transnet immediately, how does a mother let her 2 and 3 year old play near the railway line and the communities that live near the railway lines need to take some responsibility as well.

The people living there make those holes in the fence, and they will continue to make them even if they are repaired plus they don't report the holes in the first place to get them fixed. But when something goes wrong they blame Metrorail (I don't think it's Spoornet or Transnet on the suburban lines).
