Toll road protest

The toll roads are supposed to be online this April. I was wondering what people will be doing, since we haven't protested their construction. Is anyone up for a blockade of the roads, or a stay-away or something? Surely we can flex our motoring muscles in order to bend this to our favour?
 
I think there is a go slow protest every morning on the N3 north from Gilooly's.
 
702 keeps mentioning will be 12c/km which doesn't bother me much, that would be less than R5 a day for me. If it makes less cars drive on the highway, great! I get to work faster saving a bit on fuel and these news offramps and onramps are way better than the old apartheid age crap.

Anyway, its only going to be activated in June or Jule somewhere, April their just activating it for testing and familiarising. Hopefully all the construction is done by then.
 
The final figures are not even agreed on as yet, which I find scary. I don't mind the upgrading of our roads, but tolling us for them when we pay taxes that should be allocated for the upkeep of the roads is not right.
Especially roads which are located in JHB. Unless we take the tolls and make sure that we hold SANRAL accountable for all the upkeep.
 
People come on, we definitely do need to do something! I don't need to tell you how we are being taxed to death already (and yes some of it should be earmarked for road maintenance) and now we need to pay more! Did you know that the government is making us pay VAT on the road tolls? That is a bit of a cheek, don't you think, considering that the road toll is a "stealth" tax which is being levied by a privatised arm of government? I never thought I would ever be part of a protest, but in this case I will be there with a smile on my face (and am prepared to perform whatever ridiculous "stunts" I need to get to attention in this matter).

petrol price going up 50c next month
it is cheaper for some to stay at home then drive to work
 
Sure, I'm in... just tell me when and where and I will be there with a few tyres, gasoline, and a box of matches.
 
I agree, which is why I think we need to incorporate some companies here as well. We need to get some car clubs, biker clubs, logistic companies and host a stay away from toll roads as much as possible. Does anyone know where we can contact such clubs for a unified response to the toll gantries?
 
Man i am in KZN but i would like to help out anyway i can :), would anyone mind holding up their IPAD Wifi / 3G or similar device and show me protesting through a webcam :D.

Ok but seriously, TAX'd for toll OMG, thats not cool.

Your one-day protest will be about as effective as the petrol station stay-aways have been in the past - zero percent. General South African apathy will always hamper mass action. Industry pressure would be easier to organise however that too would only be temporary as there is no alternative. The inflationary pressures are what concern me the most considering this is a far higher figure than what was originally discussed (if memory serves correct, between 10c and 25c per km.)

It is an absurd amount to charge however I'll bet my bottom dollar that we'll pay it and keep bitching around the braais about it without anything productive being done to curb the ass-raping of the consumer...

Lol holding up an Ipad may not be the best idea cause that will show them (SANRAL) that you have some extra money to spend ;)
Btw fixed SANRAL for you before some members come correct you. Thanks for your support!

While that may be true, some form of effort may help in anyway possible. It doesn't have to be a one day either. Just we need to do something to show them that there are people in this country that will not just stand around doing nothing.

Logistics companies? Logistic companies?

Logistic companies cannot afford stay-aways - they will however have to calculate new routes or pass the cost on to the next party - simple as that. I suspect that you over-estimate the impact on logistic companies. End users/consumers on the other hand will feel the full brunt of the increase, and a whiny little stay-away/protest will do nothing to change that - this project is far too long in the making for anything to change and there is a reason why the price/km was held back until the last possible minute - the prices have been known amongst them now for many months already.

I applaud your passion but I suspect you and the few hundred other motorists who follow suit won't impact SANRAL's business on any possibly substantial scale...

Well stand up and do something then if it makes you feel better, but I'd rather see something well organised and hitting at the heart of SANRAL's bottom line than a protest/march/petition/email. The problem with this though is that in order to make it effective, every consumer who involves themselves in any action has to seriously inconvenience themselves for quite some time (or at least until the complaints are dealt with.) The likelihood of enough people doing so for more than a day is...well...slimmer than pregnancy by wind pollination if you ask me. SANRAL knows this and they have the consumer by the short and curlies.

Prices should not have been the final disclosure - government should have tasked SANRAL with providing a solution at under a specific cost but I suppose that might have been far too logical and open for the necessary government "procurement" policies to have been followed...
 
The best way is to continuously vandalise the cameras / equipment to keep it dysfunctional, but it'd probably won't happen.
 
Well we have the most powerful consumer gadget in our hands, the INTERNET and with that we can make a difference. If only a small one, its a step in the right direction, we can even make some youtube videos and hope the news networks pick them up.

What you guys think?? atleast that way alot of people can get involved by simply getting a camera, a youtube account, some boards and some good writing skills (which i don't have :P).

We have many MANY talented people on here and more not on here.

"sigh" i hope i don't sound silly.

I want to help :o
