Too fat to fly?

LOL, that's funny coming from someone called unskinnybob.
I'M BIG BONED!

ok i think some of you need to be a bit more sensitive to this issue. some people have problems with this ok. it's not like people want to be obese. yes there are people who over eat and those need to get a wake up call and they can certainly do something about it i.e. diet and stop eating take outs etc. but there are those with medical problems who really can't help it at all. so stop being the school yard bullies. be careful what you say be in on a forum or in real life. it's hurtful.
Yes, yes, yes. Fat people are people too. They just take up more space AND THEREFOR need to buy 2x tickets!

"I eat because I'm unhappy! I'm unhappy cause I eat. It's a vicious cycle" - Fat Bastard.

Se voet about being more sensitive..

If you can't fit in a single seat, you pay for 2... plain and simple.

If you have a medical condition that makes you that size of a porker then you probably shouldn't be flying, or you need to get a doctor to sort you the hell out to make you less of a rolling mound of fat.

this is just rude. cortisone can also cause weight gain.

it is also rude of the other people on this forum who are being judgmental towards fat people before you know the reason for their condition. you don't judge people if they have cancer or some other disease that is not their fault now do you.

be sensitive to others before you pass judgment.

Being fat is a persons _own_ fault, (choice i dare say...).

I am just short of 2m tall - i want the seat in front of me to not be sold and be foldable so it can be put away so that I dont grind my knees... at least been tall was no wrong doing of my own

"it is also rude of the other people on this forum who are being judgmental towards fat people before you know the reason for their conditio" -> reason = eat too much, with the exception of the like... 2 people on the planet with a genetic reason to be fat

//edit: instead of selling a "seat" on a plane, the airlines should sell a space of say 1.5m^2 on a plane (or how ever much space one seat currently takes, then if you dont fit in your space you can buy more, if you dont buy more - you "tresspass" into another persons place and must pay a fine

What's amazing is that there would be no fat people if they exercised as much as they made up excuses for being fuge.

Whether they are fat due to some malady or whether they are fat because they are disgusting fat slob gluttons is really immaterial.

If they use two seats they pay for two seats - or am I missing some important point here ?

What Dave said.

It's not a matter of being fat. If you weigh 55 and your luggage weighs 20kgs, vs me weighing 90 and my luggage weighing 20kgs then why am I not paying more than you? Simple. I only occupy the space allocated to me. Obese people should count their blessings that airlines do not weigh luggage+passengers & charge for anything above a specific weight category.

If you're oversized, you infringe on the space of those who paid just as much for their ticket as you did. You pay for the space you occupy. Simple as that. If I broke my leg and had to wear a cast that requires me to take up two seats, I will pay for 2 seats. Why? Because my non-standard physique is not the airline's fault.

As for increasing the seat size, if airlines did that, we'd all be paying 1st class ticket prices to make up for the loss of revenue due to fewer seating availability. People love sugar coating it as discrimination, when it's really just a matter of physics. Think about it, if Mr Jabba T. Hutt wants to buy an Audi TT, but he can't fit into it, would the dealership entertain his demand for a bigger audi at the same price?

When you purchase a ticket, you select which seat you want. seat. singular. If you're going to require more than one seat, buy another ticket. Same goes for disabled people who need extra seats for helpers etc. Every seat that you don't pay for, the airline absorbs by charging us more next time around. It's kind of like paying taxes so others can get water/electricity for free. Difference is, flying on an airline is not a basic human right.

Don't be a dumb now. Nobody here said that fat people are fat because they are lazy/stupid/(insert).

Fat people cause discomfort for others and thus must pay more. Economics also agrees: they cause a negative externality that has to be internalised ie. they pay more

Not really, unskinny can mean 1000 things.

That's just it, it's actually the airlines' fault for making seats so ridiculously tiny (tuna cans) in the first place.
With regards to width those seats are wide enough to accomodate a human being from skinny to properly chubby.

But I suppose all you lot will also say I also need to pay more because I'm a "tall ****" so it's my fault there's no leg room.
No, Nobody will say it's your fault there is no leg room, because you didn't design the plane.
Yes, you will need to pay more if you want to book an emergency exit or economy comfort seat with extra legroom if you are a tall person, or you will need to check in early and get lucky to catch one of above mentioned seats open.

That being said, if someone really is so fat that they actually need 2 seats, they should pay for them, especially in the US and Canada where it's so cheap to fly.
Is it really that much cheaper ? I've heard different stories, and I know Europe is definitely not much cheaper. Further, not only do the obese people take up an addional seat that they don't want to pay for, they alone weigh considerably more than me and all my luggage.

I'm not really hating on these people though. I know they want to fly as well. As long as the plane gets me to my destination and I can have the entire seat that I paid for all to myself, I don't care what they paid.

Don't get me started on y'all tall freaks! You guys SHOULD buy the seat in-front of you. Nothing like already sitting in the upright position and getting a pair of bony knee knobs in the kidneys! :D

Sorry.95% of fat people has one problem. Food. 60% of children in our country is fat. If fat people were sick, the whole government is going to peck soon. The police force and army as well.

Who cares if its rude..

They're not even fat, they're CLINICALLY obese.... they must pay for 2 damn seats.

Cortisone can cause weight gain.. but hells bells one has to take an absolute crapload of the stuff to become clinically obese.

Maybe have a fat section on a plane? :D Oh wait thats not PC.
Most of the time its because they eat crap and do not exercise, lets call a spade a spade.

I said it. If the 5% of people that has a medical reason to be fat was the only people that are fat we would not be having this discussion.
Best part of it its the people that has conditions that they are the people trying to not be fat.

(we are not talking chubby people. We are talking people that needs two seats)

You mean call a spade a fat guy's dessert spoon? :p

As an aside to this whole "too fat to fly" discussion..

I also wish to put forward the motion that gingers must pay for an entire plane..... they're also offensive to us normal ppl..

*runs FAR away* :D

If they found a way to trap all the methane gas generated by said fat section, the plane would be near self-propelled. I'm thinking some sort of extraction vents in the seats?

Brings new meaning to the term "cattle class".

If i get you!!!!! you will have a fresh spray of ginger peeeezzz coming your way!!

:D

I paid for my seat, and expect the full use of it.

If some fat oozes over to my side, and is a bother and nuisance, I'll simply get out a ballpoint pen and jab at the oozing folds of flab until it retreats.

Or else they will have to assign me another seat.

Would love to see three fat people trying to squeeze in next to each other in a row with 3 small seats....
