So in my never-ending quest for cheap local mac prices, I came across these ads in the junkmail:

http://search.junkmail.co.za/q/?rgn=5&kwd=macbook+pro&sec=0

http://search.junkmail.co.za/view/C...s-MacbookPro-brand-new-17inch-in-F2602-200924 - this is one of the results above.

So I gave the guy a call. His name is Kenny and he lives in Stellenbosch. Apparently he and a friend are starting a business whereby they import macs from a supplier in the states and sell them cheap here. They've been operating for 2 or 3 months, and want to get to a point where they can set up an online presence and eventually a retail store.

At the moment they have stock of previous gen macbook pros - 13, 15 and 17 inch. He is selling a 2.66 and a 2.93 for R19500 each.

Now, for first time buyers, he requires a 50% deposit, and 50% on shipping. He won't accept COD, even though I have family who can collect in Stellies, as the stuff ships from PE (where I also have family who can collect - not allowed). I asked him for some company credentials and he said he will supply a "company invoice and relevant information" when the order is placed, and that "due to security purpose, the company doesn't want to give out business information at the ordering status." Suddenly this whole thing sounds much more dodgy.

Anyway, what do you guys think? If he's for real, then he has some good deals on computers, but I don't want to lose R10k on a bad deal... I think I'll keep looking...

My main concern - assuming they are legit - is if something went wrong with it and you didnt have an original invoice to present to Core.

Won't accept cash on pickup , scam dude leave it !

LOL, I live in stellenbosch. Tell him that I want to go see his business and get some info on him. Then watch him make up some bs reason!

Ja, I agree, it all seems a bit weird. I'll probably check on the COD thing again, otherwise just leave it... Anyway, thanks.. It sucks that you can't just trust ads in the papers..

ive seen his ads on gumtree cape town as well.a sure indicator for me that it is a scam is that they all have hotmail or other freemail addresses despite claiming to represent large companies.
