THE University of Stellenbosch reversed its decision to grant a pupil a place in medical school - after discovering that she was white, not coloured, as she had mistakenly stated in her online application.

The 18-year-old applicant, who asked that she not be named, achieved six distinctions in her Grade 11 exams and, in September, learnt the university had accepted her application. But, on October 13, Dr Ronel Retief, the head of academic administration, phoned her to verify her race.

The teenager told Retief she was white - and was informed this would affect her chances of being admitted to study medicine.

University spokesman Susan van der Merwe said the pupil's selection was reversed after it came to light that the applicant made "a bona fide mistake" on the application form.

"The decision was taken to safeguard the integrity and fairness of the process in terms of the more than 550 candidates who had not been selected and who, based on merit, were ranked higher."

Van der Merwe said Indian candidates, preferably from the Western and Northern Cape and African and coloured candidates from all provinces were selected first.

Why do you still have to fill in your race in this supposedly 'Non-racial' society. She will probably head off overseas now, another promishing student lost. Just because of some silly mistake.
 
UCT is worse, my cousin had 8 distinctions in Matric and couldn't get in there for medicine. Being a white male is very tough in terms of getting into your varsity course.
 
At tukkies they just do a BSC medical science course, it is basically a course designed so that the whitey can get into medicine after a few people dropped out during the first semester.
 
People, you are not allowed to point out racism against whites/Europeans on this forum! Please, STOP posting this crap in here or you risk a permanent ban! There is one particular mod looking out for things like this and he will ban you in no time.
 
At UFS there are 200 slots reserved for white and 200 slots reserved for non-white students. The sad fact is, they struggle to filll the non-white slots with people with the minimum qualifications while the white slots get filled quite quickly. The result is that many competent, potential doctors are turned away for no reason other than their skin colour.

Family friend from Durbz(Pinetown girls high + also head girl with all distinctions),did that route.

she should go in doing some other medical degree then switch in second year when most of the first years have flunked out.

She should just have stuck with saying that she was coloured, isn't black/coloured/white suppose to be a self-identifying term? Or do we have a pencil test..
 
I know of a girl here that was also given the boot when she applied for medicine.
"Get yourself a honours degree and then we will accept you."

Nope, still too white. She is now working on her doctorate in psychology on schizophrenia. Germany has made her numerous offers to study with them since what she is researching has never been done in psychology.

Now you tell me, she wanted to be a medical doctor...
 
Seen this first handed, girl got 10 distinctions in matric and was denied to medicine at WITS and another girl (same grade and school) got 3 distinctions and was ACCEPTED!

Also if you look at the entrance requirements from some varsities there is 2 different requirements for blacks and whites... blacks require 50% where whites require 60%

No wonder all the clever people are going overseas :P only a loss for SA
 
I know of 3 people who had their psych masters applications rejected on a racial basis. Unfortunately there were only 7 slots for whites. Their degrees are now effectively useless unless they're willing to be grief/trauma counsellors or social workers...
 
Why is there this call for expats to come "home"? Like lambs to the slaughter! I hate organisations like Homecoming Revolution and all of their spokespeople.

Every time I hear of someone that has managed to emigrate, I think good for them...

the last time i was racially discriminated against i started a company and now I employ only white people. its the least i could do after 18 years of giving without even a thank you.
 
Racism/Affirmative Action as they call it, has hit South Africa right between the eyes! Have a look at the HDI and the 'Per Capita' income for South Africa over the last years. SA is the only country in the world where this figures have dropped despite taking inflation into account ! Where the f... are the skilled people? What's going on?
 
It's leadership's way of letting us know that they know they can't compete.

You'd think that being outnumbered ten to one eighteen years down the line into rainbow lala land we'd be moving into a position where the acceptance ratios would start to fall into place naturally...but no.
