That percentage for sa sounds way low.

I don't think so. It means 1 in every 10 people you meet have AIDS (take a good look around the Christmas table  )

What gets me though is that we are the most infected in the world. I can't believe that we the rest of the African countries aren't on that list.

It could be that we have a higher reporting of it than in other African countries. Rest of africa is a little bit slack on the reporting side as well as health care. SA is very Aids aware

I have friend that worked at king edward hospital many years ago and their internal figures were much higher.

10% is massively low... the figure is close to 30 or 40%.

I seem to recall when I first learnt about AIDS that the rate was closer to 2/5 people or higher. Maybe the study is comparing declared AIDS cases versus HIV+.

Around 30% were the internal figures she mentioned

Yeah, those are the numbers I've heard from people at Med School and various hospitals that I know, and I would guess even those numbers might be on the low side since some people get it and just do nothing with it until they die.

We should just circumcise the entire country then we can solve the HIV problem!

Well with our shower head and his attitude towards open sex it's not surprising that we lead the way.
Who will get fired now. .....

I wonder where sick people go to for treatment?... :D

Of course at a hospital, duh. What do you expect. There are more sick people inside the hospital than the general population

Or maybe SA has the highest HIV prevalence rate. This has been the case for the last 10 years. Which is not that surprising given a former President who believed that HIV is a conspiracy against black people, and a health minister who believed the a concoction of beetroot, garlic and onions could heal you of the virus.

And those sick people come from the general population. These people did not come there for hiv/aids treatment but for other things.

Yes, but you cannot take the hospital data to be representative of general population. Also, they may not come there for HIV treatment but there is a correlation between being HIV status and general state of health. In other words an HIV person has a higher likelihood of visiting a hospital for health reasons compared to a HIV negative person.
