The average age of the ''Big Five's'' starting lineups in week one of the Premier League;

1 - Man Utd (24 years 5 months) - since dropped to 23 against Spurs and Arsenal
2 - Liverpool (25 years 4 months)
3 - Arsenal(25 years 7 months)
4 - Man City(26 years 2 months)
5 - Chelsea (28 years 8 months)

The Premier League average is 26 years.

Chelsea's backline is an area for concern age wise. Paulo Fereira (32), John Terry & Ashley Cole (30), Jose Bosingwa & Alex (29), Branislav Ivanovic (27) and then two young backups who won't see much of the field unless there are injuries; David Luiz and Ryan Bertrand. Terry's lack of pace is already being exposed often. Fast attacking teams - read the two Manchesters - will likely have a field day against Chelsea's backline.

A quick glance at Chelsea's squad will let you know how old it is. 6 of 8 senior defenders are ''old'' by EPL standards, that will affect the starting XI as well as the squad. And looking through the rest of the squad;

Goalkeepers;
Petr Cech (29), Hilario (35) & Ross Turbull (26) - Goalkeepers can get away with age though
Midfielders;
Michael Essien (28), Frank Lampard (33), Florent Malouda (31) & Raul Meireles (28)
Forwards;
Fernando Torres (27), Didier Drogba (33) & Nicolas Anelka (32)

Young fringe players;
Ramires (24), Juan Mata (23), Jon Obi Mikel (24), Romelu Lukaku (18) & Daniel Sturridge (22).

That team is old. Only 7 of Chelsea's 25 registered players - Premier League rules dictate a maximum squad size of 25 players with the exception of uncapped under-21's - are considered young.

No need to be sarcastic either and quite frankly you're not much of a fan if you do not know the state of your squad. Guus Hiddink was already saying this in 2009. Chelsea need to get younger. This is not a thumb suck. Fergie saw it coming and viola, just as van der Sar, Scholes and Neville head out and with Giggs heading into his final year, in come de Gea, Tom Cleverely, Phil Jones, Ashley Young & Chris Smalling, all of whom but de Gea have Premier League experience. Every opponent of Chelsea in the EPL has pointed out their weakness being age. Yes, youthful exuberance might undo Manchester United, but their future is a lot rosier than Chelsea's.

You do realise that SAF won the EPL last year with those players in his squad, so how does that contribute to your argument that chelsea are to old?

- Gary Neville made 3 league appearances last season and announced his immediate retirement in February 2011.
- Scholes made 22 league appearances, of which only 16 were as a starter. Not what you would call a key component.
- As I mentioned goalkeepers can get away with age. Brad Friedel is keeping Spurs' goal at the age of 40. But Fergie learnt from the post-Schmeichel disasters that he needed a young high quality 'keeper immediately, hence de Gea.

So yeah, I'd say it does a pretty solid job in backing my statement that age could undo Chelsea. If not now, within a season or two.

Well only Lampard & Drogba falls in the Scholes and co age group. They were looking for a midfielder, but did not get their target, fair enough. They signed Lakuka (18) which I assume is a long term Drogba replacement. They also signed Mata (23).

I think you guys are taking the age thing a bit to far. Chelsea had a bit of collapse last year which cost them, but when they got it right they still ended second. Writing them off after 3 games is a bit silly.
