Top game pirating nations revealed

Sigh.

If people would spend half as much time making good games as they do on retarded, useless piracy studies, maybe it would be less of a problem.

You mean the pirates are pirating because studios aren't making good games?

Sigh ... thats just retarded!!! those studies provide valuable bizz info on market related issues, which is why everyone 1 is starting to slate the
PC and are deciding to stop making/porting games to PC.

If you really want to call someone retarded how about calling the idiots who pirate all the good reasonably priced games ( I don't really mind
when they pirate the games that are ludicrously priced)

Some of them, yes. I personally did it a few times, and many of my friends. If the game was good I did buy it. If it wasn't I just deleted it. Remember the good old days when we had demos?

Nowadays I have a bit more money and a lot less time, so I buy only the games I really, really want and don't bother with the rest. (Meaning I don't pirate them either)

The publishers nowadays expect people to not only buy a game without playing a demo, but to buy the bloody thing before it's even released! based off a few (usually very un-independent) previews, and riddled with bugs.

Oh, they got to you too then I see. All these things do is give people false information and help them justify their preconceived notions.

"Oh well PC gamers are just a bunch of crooks that want stuff without paying for it, so we're just going to make dumbed-down TV-games from now on and 17 sequels to each one."

Gabe Newell understands how it actually works, which is why Valve (through Steam) is making a killing while everyone else bitches about piracy like a bunch of 5 year-olds.

now that i agree with steam def has things going the right way ... and if all the idiot kiddies slowed down (mind u not stopped) pirating then maybe
the larger studios would put more money and effort into producing games worthy of an original concept and gr8 gameplay.

and YES they def got to me, as a coder how the hell else are we supposed to make a living when u freaks keep stealing everything we create?

read this post a bit late ... thats a more agreeable approach and yes the lack of a demos are making it harder to decide
what it is thats actually out there worth buying, would love to see more demos to make things a little manageable,
and +1 for buying what you like we need more of those kinda thinkers out there.

There are people who will probably never pay for a game or movie or tv content if they can obtain for 'free' elsewhere. Unfortunately those people are increasing because it's just easier... These people claim content is too expensive. They claim they are willing to pay fair prices, by that they mean they themselves would like to set the price they'd like to pay.

Of course the content producers have decided to punish everyone for the actions of a few (albeit growing rapidly). The pirates don't get to see all the copyright warning because they don't buy the content, their 'content' comes pre-stripped of annoying warnings.

Yes, of course there are people like that, but they're by far the minority. Most people who pirate, would actually rather buy it, if they could afford it, it's the right thing to do. If piracy were to suddenly become impossible, they would just do without, so there wouldn't be an increase in sales.

The publishers/record companies (i.e. middle men) are just looking for something to blame for their insane profits dropping. I read somewhere (can't find the link again now) that only about 30% of a game's (hard-copies) sale price actually goes back to the studio, whereas through digital distrubution (like Steam), it's 70%. If the games are self-published it's even more. So we can pay less for the game and the programmers, artists, musicians etc, get more money. Talk about win-win.

I'm just getting fed up with paying my hard-earned money for buggy games infected with DRM that screws up my PC and takes ages to load, while the aforementioned small group of people who get stuff for free don't have that worry, and the publishers blaming piracy for their low-quality products. Case in point, TDU 2. First-game I ever pre-ordered, and the last. It's full of bugs and since release day (Friday) the servers have been down for 90% of the time.

Just buy indie games off steam. There's an indie pack if I remember.

Even before opening the article I knew Brazil would be in there.

When I was there, games were costing over R1000 if you converted it. Wtf is going to pay that?

I saw the same thing in another contender on the list, France. TV-games were about 80-100 Euro, PC games were about 30-60. Strange considering many of the large publishers and developers are based there (Atari, Ubisoft, Vivendi etc..)

Maybe they can do a study where they compare the relative cost of games to the level of piracy in that country?

That is why I will purchase Diablo III.

The online authentication is making pirating harder and harder but it does not stop people form copying movies and music - so glhf international anti-piracy commission
