Top Linux distributions

Aai, Gentoo good but not on the user friendly list :( At least UCT uses Gentoo as the preferred Distribution. :D

I used Gentoo once upon a time. It is still an awesome distro. Not user friendly though. I can understand why Ubuntu gets top position, it is truly user friendly, my girlfriend uses it and she still refers to the firefox launcher on the Desktop as "the internet". If she can use it then I reckon the average user could too.

Gentoo is a gem, most stable release I've ever used. Just takes a while to get it set up properly

Gentoo was actually the first distro I ever used, in the beginning all I used it for was to play "Konquest" :D. Ah...memories.

Wow I liked that game. I might go and get it again now, just for kicks. Do people still play it? (sorry, perhaps a little off-topic, but I am swimming in memories ATM).

EDIT: Just went and looked up Gentoo to see how it is doing. They have it running on PS3s now. A friend of mine tried yellowdog on the PS3 but it was a total mess and used to hang constantly.

Heck, I taught my mother to use Ubuntu.....

I find the top 10 list pretty awesome actually. Ubuntu obiously deserves to be up top, but OpenSuse isn't half bad either....

Gentoo is just an awesome distribution to work with. It's not for the faint-hearted....
Debian is [-]arguably[/-] the most stable distribution out there. It doesn't rely on cutting edge programs to keep it going, it rather stays with something until the next version is proved to be 100% stable.
The others are pretty cool too. I downloaded Sabayon but the ISO was corrupted (still passed the md5 hashes on local and intl mirrors) so can't comment on that one. Puppy is pretty cool, I must add....

2g surf

can anyone tell me which one of these will work on a Asus 2G surf. Have tried Ubuntu, but fails just before completion

Doesn't that model come with a SSD?

From what I have read in the past generic Ubuntu had issues with SSDs. There are versions of Ubuntu customised for netbooks that eliminate a lot of those problems.

Something you might be interested in is Easy Peasy Linux as it is pretty much Ubuntu without the netbook bugs and a customised GUI for smaller netbook screens. You get access to the standard Ubuntu repositories so you get all the Ubuntu packages (assuming the hardware can run the things you decide download :D).

Apparently it is as user-friendly as Ubuntu so still a good thing for new users.

Let there be LINKS!!!

I remember reading about an official ubuntu netbook edition (other than Xubuntu), but I'm too lazy to track down links.

I would recommend you give eeeBuntu a try (as recommended by protagon1st) as that is the netbookish official Ubuntu netbook edition thing I was thinking of in my previous post :p

Puppy Linux is another option. It runs completely within your RAM and you could even run it off a CD-R and provided you leave the CD-R burning session open you can continue to write files to the CD and carry it around as your OS (hey, some people like that sort of thing *shrugs*). I wouldn't recommend it though as it isn't really a super-functional OS and people have had issues getting it to run on netbooks. It is wicked-fast though.

Alternatively have you asked on the MyBB linux forum about the problems you have experienced with your netbook while attempting to install?

Perhaps if you post the error messages you are receiving in there then one of us could help you out?

How can they mention Sabayon and not Arch Linux?

Simple, Sabayon is much easier to install and get going than Arch. Sabayon is a nice distro but I don't get the whole thing with the binary packages seeing it's based on gentoo.

Me, I'll just stick with Arch and hope it never becomes as popular to be in the top 10. I hate wading through forums looking for info amongst a gazillion useless post like it is the case with Ubuntu.

Speaking of which, can you help me, I can't empty my trash and it tells me some rubbish about "permissions". That and my wireless isn't working, apparently I have a Broadcom4318 and this stupid piece of junk OS doesn't run all of my hardware instantly out of the box. Also my sound doesn't work, but the headphones do.

Yes I know there are 8000 other threads that have been posted about these very same problems before but I am too lazy to look through a few ofthem to find the answers I need, you better help or I will make inferences about your sexuality!

...OK perhaps an exaggeration with a little bit of stupid thrown in, but you all know what I mean :p

In general though I find the Ubuntu community pretty open and friendly. The community seems pretty open to new users and is generally willing to help. A breath of fresh air really, no new user likes being shouted down and called a noob.
